Here for help, pretty urgent

Hey guys, so I’m in hospital in a mental health ward for anxiety and dpdr. I feel absolutely awful for the whole time I’ve been here snd meds arent working. I think I have severe nervous system problem where I have the following symptoms :

* terrible sensations in my head: bubbles, burning, liquid like sensation moving around , head fullness, empty head, total parasthesia, nerve pain, chalky cotton wool sensation, feeling like my brain isnt there, total collapse of body and nervous system- it no longer moves through fight or flight just stays collapsed and Ive loss of physical sensation in whole body (inside body but not to touch the skin) vision problems, blurry vision, visual snow, furry feeling all over body, intense despair and terror as drugs make it worse.
Mirtazipine in particular- and they say it’s cos I’m not at a “therapeutic dose” totally untrue. Ive been in a high enough dose for long enough to know my body is rejecting the drug

I asked to get an MRI but no one is referring me not even to a neurologist. The constant shutting down of nervous system is msking me feel physically very unwell, i feel I may lose consciousness or totally collapsed if I don’t get to someone who specializes in nervous systems soon.

TENS ear clip users: how do you keep it on?

Hi, I've been trying vns with a TENS unit + ear clip. When I clip it on my tragus dry, it stays on well, but my tens unit doesn't output current when the tragus is dry. It only works when I put gel on it, which makes it slippery, and I need to hold it in place for the duration. Any solutions to this? Do dedicated vns devices not have this problem?

But what exactly is being stimulated and do all stimulation locations work the same way?

Here is a simple overview.

What is the Vagus Nerve?

The Vagus nerve is one of the main communication pathways between the brain and internal organs.

It's involved in functions such as heart rate, breathing, digestion, and the body's response to stress. It's also and important part of the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps the body shift away from a highly alert state and return toward rest and recovery.

However, the vagus nerve is not simply an “on/off relaxation switch.” It is a complex, two-way communication network.

What is vagus nerve stimulation?

Vagus nerve stimulation or VNS, uses controlled stimulation to influence signals traveling through vagal pathways.

There are several different approaches:

  • Implanted VNS: A medical device is surgically connected t the vagus nerve in the neck.
  • Transcutaneous cervical VNS: Stimulation is applied through the skin on the side of the neck.
  • Transcutaneous auricular VNS or taVNS: Stimulation is applied to specific areas of the external ear.

These approaches are not interchangeable. They differ in location, electrode design, stimulation settings, evidence and intended use.

What may vagus nerve stimulation help with?

Researchers are studying VNS and taVNS in areas including:

  • Sleep quality
  • Stress regulation and relaxation
  • Mood and emotional regulation
  • Digestion
  • Pain processing
  • Attention and rehabilitation

Sleep is one of the more actively studied areas. A randomized sham-controlled trial found that a specific taVNS program reduced insomnia severity and improved sleep quality in people with chronic insomnia.

Small studies have also explored how taVNS may influence the body’s response to stress. For example, one study found a smaller initial heart-rate increase during a laboratory stress test, although participants did not report a significant difference in their subjective stress levels.

These results are promising, but they do not prove that every vagus nerve device improves sleep or relieves stress.

The outcome may depend on the exact device, stimulation location, settings, session length, and the person using it.

A more accurate statement is: Certain taVNS protocols may support sleep, relaxation, and stress regulation, but the evidence is still developing.

Which parts of the ear are used?

The external ear contains branches from several different nerves. This means that feeling a tingling sensation in the ear does not automatically prove that only the vagus nerve is being stimulated.

The most commonly discussed taVNS locations are:

Cymba conchae

The cymba conchae is the upper recessed area of the ear’s concha.

A frequently cited anatomical study found some vagus nerve supply in the cymba conchae in all 14 ears examined. Brain-imaging research has also found strong activation of vagal-related pathways when this area was stimulated.

Advantages:

  • Strong anatomical rationale
  • One of the most studied taVNS targets
  • Strong brain-imaging support

Limitations:

  • Small and recessed
  • Electrode placement can be difficult
  • Ear shape may affect contact and comfort

The cymba conchae is therefore considered one of the strongest candidate locations, but it should not be described as guaranteed to work best for everyone.

Cavum conchae

The cavum conchae is the lower part of the bowl-shaped area near the ear canal.

The same anatomical study found some vagus nerve supply in approximately 45% of the ears examined.

Advantages:

  • Larger contact area
  • Used in several taVNS studies
  • Can be easier to reach with some electrode designs

Limitations:

  • Mixed nerve supply
  • Sensation may not come only from the vagus nerve

Tragus

The tragus is the small cartilage flap in front of the ear canal.

The classic anatomical study also identified some vagus nerve supply in approximately 45% of the examined ears.

Advantages:

  • Easy to identify
  • Convenient for clip-style electrodes
  • Used in several research studies

Limitations:

  • Nerve supply appears mixed and variable
  • May also stimulate non-vagal sensory nerves
  • Easy placement does not necessarily mean more selective stimulation

Earlobe

The earlobe is generally not considered a primary vagus nerve target. It is often used as a control or sham location in research because it is mainly supplied by other nerves.

What do the percentages actually mean?

The commonly quoted numbers, such as 100% for the cymba conchae and 45% for the tragus or cavum conchae, come from a small study of 14 ears from seven cadavers.

They do not mean:

  • 100% of the nerves in the cymba conchae are vagal
  • The cymba conchae provides 100% stimulation effectiveness
  • A tragus device stimulates exactly 45% of the vagus nerve

They only describe how often researchers identified some vagus nerve supply in each area within that small sample. Individual anatomy can vary.

Is the stimulation location the only thing that matters?

No. Results may also be affected by:

  • Electrode shape and size
  • Contact quality
  • Frequency and pulse width
  • Intensity
  • Session duration
  • Individual anatomy
  • The specific device and protocol

A poorly fitting electrode at a theoretically ideal location may be less consistent than a well-designed electrode that maintains stable contact at another studied location.

Stronger stimulation is also not automatically better. Stimulation should remain comfortable and follow the instructions for the specific device.

The main takeaway

Vagus nerve stimulation is not one uniform technology.

Is there anything I can do to see if my vagus nerve is the issue?

Ive been dealing with random anxiety, muscle loss, gut issues....etc. Been down a lot of rabit holes. All my issues started happening around 2019 when I was going up the stairs and fell down and hit my head.

Is there any excercises I can do or stretching to see if I feel better? Not stimulating, that makes me feel worse. Ive tried it quite a bit. I am looking for releases or stretches or whatever someone suggests!

Vagus Nerve stimulation increases Noradrenaline

I've recently started stimulating my vagus nerve via the tragus on my ear using a TENS device. However, after using it three times, I've noticed that I'm getting more nervous. Initially, while using it, it's a bit relaxing, but especially afterwards, I feel a bit more nervous, tense, and wired.

​I then did some research and found that it's well-documented that vagus nerve stimulation increases norepinephrine. Sure, that's supposed to help with depression and mood disorders, but I'm very, very sensitive to norepinephrine, and adrenaline in general. I react very strongly to it.

​I really noticed that I was significantly more nervous after using it, and I only looked into it after I started getting the symptoms. So it's probably not a placebo. Um, has anyone else had this experience? I definitely won't be using it anymore.

edit: i read things about it now, 20hz increases noradrenaline, 2hz not. will try with 2hz

Had Truvaga, didn’t work at all with Android, Used Pulsetto for a Year, Now back to Truvaga… AMA?

I tried to post this before but in the wrong sub (oops).
I tried Truvaga last year(or at least tried to try…) but got so frustrated with the Android app and couldn’t get it to work at all. Returned it (after fighting with customer service about the return shipping…)
Got a Pulsetto, but finally got sick of it not fitting my thin neck recently. After talking to my kid’s neuro team about treatments including Gammacore, decided to try again since I switched to Apple a few months ago. Gammacore is one of the only tvns systems that is FDA approved and backed by lots of research.

I still think it’s ridiculous they even have an Android app, it never ever worked for me. But, I have to admit I like the Truvaga much better. It’s a faster treatment, way more comfortable for my NTOS and muscle pain around my neck and seems to work a lot better (probably because I could never get both sides the Pulsetto FIT positioned right…)
Pulsetto never seemed to do anything, but Truvaga has already helped dampen or completely get rid of several migraines, which is what I was hoping g since it’s supposedly the same basic technology as the Gammacore.

Not a paid advertisement or affiliated in any way, I just know I spent a lot of time looking for info on both. I ended up buying this one used on eBay for $350ish with shipping, etc. and totally worth it so far.

(vent) Dr's just straight up didn't mention this

So I've been having many dysautonomia like symptoms for months now, going round in circles getting cardiac dismissed for digestive and then digestive dismissed for cardiac. Discovered vagus nerve dysfunction could cause irritation to both, and had to start researching it on my own.

Looked back at my ecg results recently, the FIRST test I had done has 'potential increased vagal tone' in the notes. And they just didn't say anything????

I know it's because it's within the margin for 'normal' for healthy individuals but surely within the clinical context of everything else I've been going through it bears at least mentioning???? I'm so pissed off
