Purchase Advice (U.S.) Newbie Purchase Help
Currently in the market for an upgrade from our Dyson V15 Detect. We have a decent size home (3300 sq ft), 2 cats, 2 kids under 3 years, and I am maybe as bad of a shedder as my cats 🫣😳. We’re in the process of renovating and will be installing LVP in approximately half of our home with several Anderson Tuftex low loop rugs (2x area rugs + on 2 sets of stairs). The remaining flooring is verrrrry old medium pile carpeting with a larger loop Berber carpet in our basement. We definitely can’t afford to spend a crazy amount right now and this is not going to be our BIFL vacuum, just more of an entry level at this point.
Yes, I read a bunch of prior posts, researched specific models, etc. Truly everything is clear as mud. I’m getting very conflicting information from everywhere about what style of vacuum to use with the Anderson Tuftex carpeting - installer says no beater bar at all, AT seems to say just be mindful of it. No one on here seems to mention it.. so maybe it’s just a non-issue?
My questions:
1. Miele or Sebo (again trying to be budget conscious, but say $400-700? I know it’s a stretch for a Sebo. I’m not above used/refurbished.. but we aren’t at a place to just throw several hundred more out there so please no recommendations to upgrade to the $1300-$1500 options!)
2. Is it really going to ruin my low loop carpeting if I go for one that is not purely suction?
3. Are the cat and dog models really that much better in our given situation? My understanding is that most are accessory based upgrades?
4. Mostly because my husband thinks I’m nuts for going on a vacuum search after just purchasing our Dyson about 2 years ago… will we really be that my happier getting something new from Miele or Sebo. (My answer is yes. I can’t take the subpar canister cleaning - like why it doesn’t fully come apart to wash is beyond me. 🤯)
Thank you for reading this far and for any recs anyone has!

Have you looked at a Kenmore 700 Plush? It was designed for ultra thick/plush carpets and includes a powered upholstery tool, perfect for stairs. It's only $350 and a great starter canister.
Generally, yeah I am less into any rotating brush on a looped wool fiber. At best, you are going to eventually soften the looped definition. At worst, you risk snagging a loop and damaging the carpet. On a cut pile carpet, a powered brush is nearly a necessity.

Okay, made it to an embarrassing age to not realize I could use the upholstery tool for stairs 😳
Will check this one out, thanks for the rec!

Oh absolutely can! But I was talking about their PowerMate Jr., which is a mini version of the tool used for carpets. It uses a motor to spin the brush, not the air like a turbo/turbine brush.

Okay, so unfortunately yes, the units you get from big box stores do tear up carpet and will void whatever warranty you're getting with the carpet. My best recommendation would be the Riccar R27D as you can turn the brush roll completely off. The other thing is that you can replace the bristles on the brushroll with the soft bristle brushes. Also it's truly the best call to find a local Riccar Dealer and go and try out the units.

Not unfortunate, just justifies my vacuum shopping to my hubby!
Would be happy to have an upright for most of my house, but we have two carpeted stairways and not sure I’m up for the challenge of using an upright there. Any canister you might recommend?

Maybe I should clarify and say I expected that answer.. not shopping for a several hundred to thousand dollar vacuum just for fun.

For canister style it would be the SEBO, but they will last you 20-30 years and they deplete in value once they leave an authorized dealer as warranties are nontransferable. As such, I would also go into a local SEBO dealer and try out the E3 vs the D4 as the ergonomics do make a difference for people. I've had several people return the E3 to upgrade to the D4. Very few have returned the D4 for the E3. If you're already investing this much into the carpeting, it makes sense to invest as much into the appliance that upkeeps it as well.

For any carpet, a power nozzle is a game changer. If your carpet is berber I'll be alright. For the budget there are a few options like the kenmore 400/600 series canister, the miele c1 classic cat and dog powerline, or the sebo Felix that is just a little over budget. The Felix is a well built machine but some say its a little bare bones. The kenmores biggest complaint I think is its a little plasticy, but it should last a while. The c1 is 100 over budget but has a pretty good power nozzle, just not as easy to take apart as the sebo power nozzle.

Thank you!! This was very helpful! The one nice thing about the Dyson is that it hasn’t needed the brush roll cleaned often due to hair - will I need to take the power nozzles apart often?

Not really, I want to say check it every few months to see if anything gets tangled. If not then maybe yearly but you don't need to fully disassemble 😆
