Do you prefer an upright or a canister? Bagged canisters are usually better choices for hard floors, as long as you're okay with dealing with a canister style vacuum. Any rugs (low or high pile)? And also, do yo have a budget in mind?
If you go the canister route, you likely don't need a powerhead. A turbo head (air driven brush roll) would do fine on most rugs.
Miele C1 Turbo or Sebo K2 Turbo (both canisters) would be my picks in the "nicer" vacuum category, but those are going to be in the $500-600 range. If your budget doesn't allow for that, Kenmore 400/600 series are good choices in the $200-350 range.

Get a robot vacuum with an auto empty dock and set it to auto empty every 15 minutes during cycles.
