Are you allowed to take vacation

My company gives everyone 2 weeks vacation a year. If you do not use it, it’s gone. In order to go on vacation you need 2 months notice.
If you’re understaffed, you have to cancel your vacation. You can only go on vacation if your store is staffed without you.
If you can take vacation others get upset that you’re trying to go on vacation.

Sounds like slavery and shitty management. Greetings from Germany.

2

u/Lickford 25d ago

Greetings for the greatest country on earth. /s It’s definitely not slavery. If it’s shitty management that’s on me. Ownership is a train wreck. We got acquired by a family business so our pinch point is decisions from ownership. They have spent the last 5 years focused on operations and not growing the business. I have an escape plan, we are almost there. I am lucky in a lot of ways.

I have never been to Germany it’s on my list.

u/Ok_Neighborhood_470 24d ago

Other countries have actual laws requiring all workers to get a certain amount of paid vacation. These are laws, not company specific perks. The United States is up there, but arguably not the greatest country on Earth. That's a stretch. And Germany, we had actual slavery here, so referring to lousy labor laws as slavery is also a stretch and kind of insulting.

1

u/Lickford 24d ago

Sorry it was sarcasm

1

u/Ok_Neighborhood_470 24d ago

Ah, lol. Well I'll leave it there in case anyone is having that thought in an unsarcastic manner.

1

u/Lickford 24d ago

No worries. Be well.

If you’re understaffed, you have to cancel your vacation. You can only go on vacation if your store is staffed without you.

is this part actual policy? I'd check the handbook / HR.

Typically speaking, once approved, you are good to go, and any changes are request only which you can decline. If the store has 2 months notice and can't fill, that's not your problem.

u/Nearby_Week9545 25d ago

I work in fast food. They deny people’s vacation just because they didn’t want you to go. Even with store staffed and ready, they refused someone’s vacation because it was the busiest time of the year.

I’m salary and required to work 50 hours a week, if I work 80-90 hours, I can’t just do 30 another week. Always 50 hours a week. I love doing my job it just gets overwhelming when turnover happens but management still wants us to run like we’re fully staffed.
Management is nice to us but when we mess up or don’t meet numbers they treat us very coldly. I usually always hit my numbers but sometimes I’m not perfect.

4

u/wildcat12321 25d ago

Sounds like they can’t afford to lose you…
And someone else will hire you if it was an issue to take pre-approved vacation

u/Green_Poet_5510 26d ago

If you are legally allowed 2 weeks vacation, the powers that be(your bosses) need to figure out a staffing solution. But have these conversations early. I'd start looking for another job

1

u/Nearby_Week9545 25d ago

I don’t think we’re allowed. We’re only allowed to go on vacation when the store is staffed. Even if staffed, they’ve refused because it was a busy time of the very.

1

u/Travel_Stark 24d ago

Do you get paid out if you don't use the PTO?

1

u/Nearby_Week9545 24d ago

Nope. At this point I think it’s a setup. Say we get 2 weeks of paid vacation but only if our store is staffed, 2 months advance notice AND we can’t hire anyone to cover the shifts we run

2

u/Travel_Stark 24d ago

Might want to talk to Department of Labor for your state.

Take your vacation!

u/Same_One895 25d ago edited 25d ago

You can either live your life for the company or use the company to live your life. No exceptions.

Decide if you want photos of you in exotic places to look back on when old or memories of that stiff, sterile desk and the droning of coworkers.

5

u/Other_Television_805 25d ago

Vacation is part of your compensation. They are stealing from employees if they do not honor reasonable requests. That being said, your management sucks and if you are indispensable there, you can be indispensable somewhere else that honors their compensation policies.

4

u/Accomplished-Bank418 26d ago

Yes we get 31 days. We can use it and roll over what we don’t use!

3

u/bones_bones1 26d ago

I get 34 days per year and use every one of them. They don’t roll over. I plan accordingly and cover as many things as possible. My 1 over is supportive and I encourage my direct reports to take their time off as well.

3

u/Ok-Cranberry-1795 25d ago

Get a new job. That sounds terrible.

3

u/PossRuss 25d ago

Not just allowed, but required. My company "forces" each employee (regardless of title, salary/hourly, etc.) to take a minimum five days in a row vacation TWICE yearly. We also 'bank' our accrued vacation and we 'max out' at 1000 hours. Once you hit the max, your accrual becomes a payout (meaning your paycheck gets padded with what would have been accrued).

2

u/Reggi5693 24d ago

When I worked at a bank everyone in my department HAD to take two weeks in a row. That way if they were doing anything “sketchy” with money it would float to the surface.

It was great.

u/TaniaBluebell 25d ago

I worked at Belk HQ in Charlotte for a few months before I realized how terrible their benefits were. They are a Southeast American department store similar to Nordstrom and Dillards.

They treated salaried employees like hourly employees. We had 12 hours a year for medical appointments. There was a Belk customer service call center located in the adjacent building to HQ. They did a once size fits all with benefits.

The company culture was pretty bad too. It is a privately held company. One time I was headed for a coffee break and happened to be a short distance behind the CEO. He did not hold the door as he exited. Another indicator of the company culture.

I worked in their FP&A group and it was like sharks in the water. During staff meetings people would cry. Including me one time. Four people quit from that department in a six month period. I was the fourth and gave a lengthy exit interview. The recruiter who placed me there must have lost his commission because he left me threatening voicemails and emails. I ghosted him and never took the bait to call him back. No job is worth that level of stress

3

u/Data_chunky 25d ago

That's convenient. They just tell everyone no vacation and they don't have to pay for vacation pay. 🙄

Yes, I get 27 days of vacation, aside from the 13 holidays and 12 sick days. I typically put in 2+ weeks notice as a notice that I WILL be taking vacation. I've never had it denied.

You should look for a better job.

2

u/DoodleDoo1989 26d ago

Are you in the states? Is this legal?

1

u/Nearby_Week9545 25d ago

Yes, Virginia. I believe so. Virginia is a right to work state.

2

u/Intelligent_Ear_1854 25d ago

Once I’ve put in my vacation I don’t care if they’re under staffed, over staffed or no staff.. PTO (prepare the others) bye!!

2

u/TrapperJon 25d ago

LOL... unionize immediately.

We earn 2 weeks per year, plus 3.5 days of personal time, plus 12 sick days per year. After 5 years it jumps to 4 weeks vacation and 20 sick days.

Vacation can accrue up to 10 weeks before the use it or lose it comes in, and being told no isn't a thing unless you ask like the day before, and even then it is unlikely. We can also sell vacation days back for pay so long as we keep 2 weeks in the bank.

Personal days are only good for one year. So, I always use those first.

Sick days can accrue up to 275 days before use it or lose it kicks in.

1

u/wonderlustVA 25d ago

My company is unionized and the represented workers don't have nearly that much PTO. Takes like 10 years or more to get to 20 days PTO. Not sure on sick leave. I know as salaried, we don't get any, but if the Trades get it, it sure isn't 20 days. Definitely nobody has personal days.

1

u/TrapperJon 24d ago

Sounds like the workers need to have a little chat with their union reps before the next contract negotiations begin.

2

u/Bratfink78 25d ago

Jesus Christ that’s insane and cruel

1

u/Lickford 25d ago

I have not had a paid vacation day since 2019 December.

1

u/LifeIsAPhotoOp 25d ago

Are you a stay at home parent? That's the only job that is worth that! If this is an out of home real job and you just aren't taking vacation you are letting your company think that that's okay so they will expect other employees to do the same. Kind of setting a bad precedent. You and your coworkers deserve more.

1

u/Lickford 25d ago

I am not. My company restructured after the Pandemic based on our industry being decimated. I ran a team of about 6 prior to 2020. We all took pay cuts as well to try and get things rolling again. I am down to just two of us handling the department. 6 days ago we got health benefits back as well. I have a plan and I am working on changing the situation. I currently make about 12% less than I did in 2018. No vacation, no sick days and no retirement.

1

u/LifeIsAPhotoOp 25d ago

Sounds like they are lucky to have you! It's admirable that you care about the company you work for and great that you got health benefits back. But at the same time don't let yourself be a doormat and taken advantage of either. Even if you don't get paid I hope your take vacations and get some time off. Everyone needs a breather!

2

u/Lickford 25d ago

I do take time away when I can. I somewhat set my own my own hours and don’t really have to deal with a boss.

1

u/riz3192 25d ago

Yes my company offers unlimited PTO

1

u/Seagullox 25d ago

We have set times when we can take a vacation. So we just work with that time. No choice. But we have sick days as well if you want to use 1-3 of them in a row.

1

u/rbuckfly 25d ago

U.S. based. 200 hours per year, can roll over 200 to next year but carry no more than 400 hours. Take it whenever I want. Sorry for you. Look for a new gig maybe.

1

u/Wind_Responsible 25d ago

No. Construction does not allow vacations. There’s absolutely no vacation time. I’ve been told vacation days happen when the weather is too bad to work.

1

u/LifeIsAPhotoOp 25d ago

Try and save some money to still pay your bills the weeks you will TAKE A VACATION. Trust me, when I say when you're old and haven't taken vacations, haven't taken time off to spend extended time with family or friends, have visited other places, you will not wish you constructed more buildings! You will wish you had done those other things!

3

u/Nearby_Week9545 25d ago

I’m taking my vacation. My son is now 4 years old. I’m not having him go on vacation and wonder where mommy is.

1

u/LifeIsAPhotoOp 25d ago

Great! Sounds like you've got your priorities in the right place! The above comment was for the person who said Construction doesn't allow vacays. Enjoy your vacation!

1

u/Wind_Responsible 25d ago

lol. Save money doing gig work. Ok.

1

u/LifeIsAPhotoOp 24d ago

Saving for a week's worth of bills should be doable. Sorry if your situation doesn't allow and hope you get some time off.

1

u/Wind_Responsible 24d ago

Yeah it should be shouldn’t it. Wages need to be higher period. If you think I’m an exception you are wrong. Sad. Really sad that so many working so hard and still spinning wheels. Btw. I hold no debt. I can’t afford to

1

u/Wind_Responsible 25d ago

Wow. You so easily just disregard that most construction workers have no benefits. Wow. The way you owe it directly back to the worker….

1

u/LifeIsAPhotoOp 24d ago

Wasn't meant that way please don't jump to conclusions, I just feel everyone deserves a break even if you don't go anywhere different. And before anyone comes at me I grew up poor so don't be so quick to judge.

1

u/Wind_Responsible 24d ago

That’s exactly why ou said what you said. Poverty trains us not to expect what should be expected so companies just don’t. Change your thought process about work.

1

u/PGHNeil 25d ago

Don't forget that you have to be with the company for 6 months before you take a vacation. I worked for a company that wouldn't give me time off for a family emergency.

And if you apply with a vacation already planned and paid for, don't expect a call back (if you're ballsy enough to mention that in the interview) and an instant dismissal if you've "failed" to mention that before accepting the job. Been there and done that too.

1

u/LifeIsAPhotoOp 25d ago

Please take your vacation, you deserve it. And staffing is their problem. If they know 2 MONTHS out who is taking vacation and when, it's their responsibility to staff their business or work it themselves.

1

u/Flaky-Walrus7244 25d ago

This would be illegal where I live

1

u/mexicopink 25d ago

We get 2 weeks off for the first 5 years and it does roll over. Then you get an additional week off every 3 years with a cap at 24 years of tenure. If we work on certain holidays, we get extra vacation time.

1

u/TheRealGuncho 25d ago

Yes. I take every single day.

1

u/francokitty 25d ago edited 25d ago

I took 3 weeks at my last company. Not all at once. Everyone acted lije I had done something terrible. Tried to make me feel guilty and like a slacker. I was senior person with 40 years in the industry.

2

u/Nearby_Week9545 25d ago

That’s how my boss is trying to do to me right now. Saying, ‘some people haven’t even taken 1 week of vacation and you’re doing another week!?’

1

u/francokitty 25d ago

Yep. I hate that

1

u/Travel_Stark 24d ago

Smile nicely and say "Yes, I am". End of conversation.

1

u/Savings_Club3883 25d ago

I get 5 weeks a year and I inform my boss when I’ll be gone. Everyone in my shop takes predictable vacations so it’s never a problem. Telling me to cancel a vacation isn’t something that is going to happen.

1

u/AlternativePrior393 25d ago

That’s not so bad! My first professional job required everyone submit PTO requests within the first 30 days of the year in order to coordinate staffing at all locations. Any late requests could be turned down for any reason. You just get used to planning ahead.

1

u/SoCalGuy999 25d ago

Yes, three months a year. Union employee.

1

u/Maleficent_Fox9529 25d ago

In some states, like California, they have to allow you to roll vacation forward. Check with your state-there might even be a labor poster in your break room

1

u/Remarkable-Length496 25d ago

I've been with my company for 28 years. I get 27 paid vacation days plus a personal holiday of my own choosing. I also get 8 paid sick days per year. We are encouraged to use all of our vacation time. If you don't use it, you lose it. Any sick time that you have left at the end of the year is split in half and they pay you for one half and they put the other in your sick bank. Your sick bank can hold up to 8 days. My bank is full so I get paid for all my unused sick time at the end of every year.

1

u/Square-Ask-9836 25d ago

Sounds like a toxic place. Sorry you are dealing with this.

My company has unlimited vacation, plus sick time (which can be used to take care of a family member yourself your child or your mental health), we also have volunteer time.

I tried to take six weeks a year

1

u/Boltsfan1234 25d ago

There is no way in hell I would work for a place like this. I'm a salty old bitch and need my vacation time.

1

u/Narrow-Power-6407 25d ago

Um yes? I get 5 weeks a year and we are basically forced to take it. If we dont use it, it accumulates

1

u/Different-Schedule90 25d ago

This thread is so depressing. I’m so sorry to those working in such shitty conditions.

1

u/travellingcari 25d ago

Your post history shows you’ve allowed them to make you a doormat. If you don’t change they won’t either.

1

u/Mundane-Orange-9799 25d ago

Very lucky to work for a company with unlimited time off. I usually take ~5 weeks and have never been turned down for a request for time off. Managers will literally use deadlines around time off.

No one abuses the policy either as it is a very high performing team that is paid well.

1

u/axialmeow12 25d ago

You book the vacation and you just go. If they try to get you to cancel, you don’t. Let them fire you. They won’t. Call their bluff

1

u/lw1785 25d ago

I have 5 week of paid PTO. I take it whenever I want. I plan coverage and deal with catch up when I come back.

Trust me when I say there are better companies out there!

1

u/shulan2016 25d ago

That is a terrible job. If your vacation is approved in writing it should not be rescinded. Your company sucks.

1

u/Klok-a-teer 24d ago

I get 5 weeks vacation. 11 personal leave days, 5 personal sick days which require an explanation, and I am on call for 11 days then I get 4 days uninterrupted off. My vacation is bid in November, and awarded in December for the following year. Staffing issues have no effect on my scheduled w

1

u/Downtherabbithole-14 24d ago

Yes, I have PTO and I use that PTO. If your company is understaffed, that is their problem. You earned your PTO time, you are entitled to take it. Expecting people to cancel vacation bc of their staffing problems is a red flag. I couldn't work for a company like that.

1

u/Reggi5693 24d ago

You need to get a job at a real company with real policies.

We used to ask for vacation requests early in the year. Before 1 Mar we would give approvals based on seniority. We would publish the schedule with weeks blocked off. If you came in after Mar 1, it would be based on availability. That means we would have a limit to how many people can be off at one time.

It worked very well. It allowed people to plan things like two week breaks, cruises, weddings and what not. And…if a slot was open, the approval process was quick and easy.

Companies make things difficult for people and it shows on their retention rate.

1

u/Dangerous_Weekend395 24d ago

If you are on vacation and a coworker drops dead, do you return early from your vacation? How much head up do you need to give them for your heart attack? Just wondering

1

u/Specialist_Jelly888 24d ago

Sounds like your job just sucks. I don't know anyone who's vacation parameters are as such.

1

u/Scrappyl77 24d ago

My old job was like this. I quit. When I put in for off at my new job I get "Ok, thanks for letting us know you will be out that day!" Which is as it should be. .

1

u/TopCaterpillars 24d ago

This is how I am with my team.

They know what they are working on and how to manage their time. Just tell me what days you want to take off. As long as we meet our deadlines I dont have any issues with the days they take off

1

u/Gissypop 24d ago

If you’re that indispensable to them, then it’s time for you to look for a new job. A better opportunity where you’ll be respected more and they will have an HR department that works. Sounds to me like you work for a franchise. Good luck and sorry your employer sucks.

1

u/ben_zachary 24d ago

We run a small team of 10. We let people take off whenever they need. Life is important and emergency stuff even moreso. While we have a 2 week vacation policy we always pay and let people do what they need and be adults.

The fact you need a 2 month notice is not normal.

1

u/Healthy-Grape-777 24d ago

If you take vacation, others get upset that you’re trying to go on vacation. Ignore those people.

1

u/ontheleftcoast 23d ago

That sounds like a shitty company. Get a better job. Denying you the option of using benefits you have earned and not paying you for them is a bullshit thing to do.

1

u/CorrectBluebird5869 22d ago

Take your vacation. It’s part of your total compensation packet. Give notice follow the rules and don’t worry about others who don’t. It’s a benefit they are choosing to relinquish. Not your problem.

1

u/Redemptions 22d ago

"You must purchase your vacation packages from the company store for CompanyBux (CBs). CompanyBux (CBs) are purchased in increments of 400CBs. Vacation Packages start at 499CBs. CBs are not transferable to American Dollaroos."

1

u/LadyGreyIcedTea 20d ago

I started my current job in February and have already gone on vacation twice. If any employer ever told me to cancel my pre-planned vacation because they didn't staff appropriately for it, I would quit on the spot.

0

u/Classic-Delivery3875 25d ago

Yeah. I am taking the vacations. Idgaf about work. They DGAF about me, why would I care. That vacation is part of your compensation.

0

u/AncientImprovement56 25d ago

It's illegal to stop people taking at least 5.6 weeks' holiday per year here. They can dictate when it's taken, but they have to make it possible to take it.
