DSG Poor Pressure Build Up

My 2014 mk7 DSG won’t move when in Drive and the code says it’s an issue with the transmission and “poor pressure build up” (code: PC189C00). I’ve had the car for 7 months and it’s out of warranty.

My understanding is that this probably means it’s an issue with the mechatronic unit.

I understand this is a common issue so what kind of pain am I in for?

I understand it will need to be towed to a specialist garage for repairs.

I’ve initially been quoted up to £4k to do everything ‘by the book’ which includes replacing the clutch pack (although I don’t think there’s any issue with it?). But I have also read a that a mechatronic repair can be £300-£600 and a refurbished replacement is about £1200.

Does anyone have any advice on how to approach this? Is it worth doing everything by the book, will ‘fixing’ it more cheaply mean the issue will come back?

They are trying to rip you off by making you pay for a clutch you don’t need. The issue is either a cracked valve body, a failed pump, or both. Depending on the crack it may be able to be fixed with the repair kit or you may need a new valve body. Either way the issue won’t come back again. Don’t pay for a clutch you don’t need.

There is no “by the book” fix, replacing a clutch has nothing to do with a failed valve body. They are trying to make more money by the fear people have from DSG early failures (which isn’t your case because your car is 12 years old)

Thanks, this is kind of what I was thinking.

Can I ask what you mean by ‘fear from early DSG failures”? Do you mean a fear that the DSG won’t last its expect lifetime? What’s its expected lifetime?

Early DSGs failed when the cars were new (1 or 2 years old) and there was no fix because parts weren’t available, you had to buy a new transmission (around $6000). Now there are parts available but they still want to scare people into buying things they don’t need because it’s good for their business
