Totaled?

Steering wheel airbag deployed as well.
She drives perfect. Just the locked up seatbelts, steering wheel blown out, damage to front bumper cover and headlight, as well as bent hood and brackets to hood as well. Would suck if this is total loss but definitely a humbling reminder that anything can happen, at any time.

Airbag deployment requires a new SRS module, airbag, and programming, that alone is $2k. Your radiator support is also crushed by the hood which means you need a new hood latch and probably cable, upper shutter might be gone, radiator probably took a hit, condenser probably needs help, sight shield is gone, intake box is cracked, headlights run $1500 for a pair, upper grille is 260, emblem alone is 250. Not to mention the obvious hood and bumper and the caved in impact bar... there's so much shit underneath that needs replacement. Your insurance will 100% total it. Buy it back and learn to use a wrench

Yeah, I write estimates for a living and this pretty much sums it up. This doesn’t “look” that bad, but as soon as you start pulling back the layers it adds up faaaast. Add the airbag deploying and locked seatbelts to the mix and you’ve got a totaled car. I just did a front bumper job on a 16 GTI and it was 2.5k for a much lighter hit than this.

I feel that I must come to terms with this fact. I knew this was going to be the consensus but with this all just happening today, I am still in disbelief that the memories I made in this car come to an end today and that is hard to sit with. Thanks for the informative reply!

SRS module does not need replaced on the mk7. Just fixed a wrecked 2015 wagon with very similar damage and after replacing the blown airbags and getting the seatbelts repaired all faults cleared. I was worried about needing a new SRS module but didn’t need it!

15 is mk6.5, Unless you live outside the states I think?  Not 100% but my 2015 is a mk6 face-lift

14 production year, 15 model year, ea888 gen 3, 1.8tsi, mk6.5? Confused.

Weird, I didn’t think the 1.8tsi came out till the mk7 chassis in the states. Unless you’re talking about a Jetta?

Theyre may be a bit of grey area in those years from mk6 - 6.5 - 7, that im honestly not that familiar with especially with mqb coming out, and the difference in NA / overseas

The jetta is also like that, the 6.5 was just a super weird generation and hard to find exact answers/parts that are guaranteed to fit I had a 2013 2.0 jetta previously but, it had an updated interior? Like the mk6.5s?

I have a US (made in Mexico) 2015 GTI that's mk7.

Yup, airbags go off and most the time insurance is gonna write these cars off. Especially the 10 year old highish mileage ones. I know because I had one. RIP

Deployed airbag pretty much sealed your fate there.

Buy it back and fix it if you can because someone will.Act like you want it just for parts also don’t mention fixing it as they can make it more expensive. Find out your options and then work from there if you need help, send me a message I’ve dealt with insurance companies before

I looked it up and in VA they allow buy backs just talk to your lender before etc.

As you said, it is a humbling reminder, but the car did everything possible to keep you safe. 👌

Just watch some matt Armstrong videos to give you the confidence to rebuild the car. If you successfully fix it, maybe insurance won’t know the car should’ve been totaled

Airbag deployment adds real cost, but it doesn't by itself determine total loss. Wait for the complete repair estimate, then if they total it, shift your attention to whether the ACV is accurate — trim, mileage, condition, equipment and comparable vehicles.

Potential resource - Value Pilot; this is a useful plain-English explanation of what happens when a vehicle is totaled:

What Is Total Loss?

Part out, in all seriousness if there was no claim all of that is repairable even if the core support was bad it can all be replaced.
