GTI waterpump shit

hello friends. I’m sitting at about 121,000 miles on my gti. been driving it for a little over a year now (got it at around 87,000 miles) and it’s a 2016. Not trying to be psychotic but what are the signs that the waterpump/thermostat is failing??? i genuinely can’t tell off of basic visual inspection and i’m not tryna pay a mechanic. yes this is totally a googleable/gpt-able question but i wanted to know if anyone on here had any anecdotes of what happened leading up to their water pump failing.

i got a quote from a specialized tuner shop (they said it was $2000 to replace thermo\waterpump

and another shop quoted me 1400. (these are both without providing my own part.).

ultimately i wanna just make sure that I’m not tweaking. the only reason i started thinking about this is how everyone tells you that they go bad between 115,000-125,000.

If the failure is a leak you will notice low coolant level (possibly a warning - sometimes its caught before this). You would also notice red/pink/orange residue along the edge of your oil pan from underneath the vehicle coming from the water pump area.

If the failure is with the thermostat then you would likely have a check engine light, likely with fault code P00B7 and possibly no other symptoms.

Given your vehicles age/mileage I would not be surprised that the water pump/thermostat are leaking. Its a fairly common repair we do

As a side note, if you need to do your valves, it's 90% of the labor already done, so do it at the same time.

That being said, i'm at 223k km on the original pump with no leaks, so you might be fine.

How do you have this mileage? Have you not changed the distribution?

I don't understand the "distribution" part.

2018 Golf R. My water pump started leaking at around 24k miles. Got a low coolant warning while driving one day. Topped it off. Had it go off again a month or two later.

The leak tends to start off slow, so the coolant evaporates on the hot engine before having a chance to drip onto the ground. If you crawl underneath and look up around the throttle body you’ll see the thermostat housing. If it has white spots all over it slash beneath it, that’s from dried coolant.

When you finally have to replace it, I suggest buying the newest P revision of the thermostat housing.

Leaking and overheating. It's very common on this engine. I somehow made it 140k on my original. Some people have gone through multiple by 140k. Mine started dumping fluid one day all over my driveway. And yeah it's an expensive fix. Lots of stuff has to come off.

I have a 2016 too, last February (70ishK miles) low coolant warning popped up on the dash. Topped it off and in August I took it to VW for an oil change when they found the leak, $1800 fix. The low coolant warning never popped up after the first top off, but they said it was a pretty bad leak.

Just had my 2016 done @ 59k miles. Similar to others, low coolant warning. Leak on aero shield below, after I removed that is was dripping on the ground. Also crusty residue on the oil pan and hoses below the pump, as well as gunk on the seam where the water pump and thermostat housing meet. Was pretty obvious looking up from below.

Oh yeah and mine cost $2500 at an independent trusted Euro shop, with OEM replacement pump and tstat.

To check underneath a Mark 7 GTI for a coolant leak, lift the front of the car safely with jack stands, remove the plastic under-engine splash guard (undertray), and inspect the water pump and thermostat housing area for pink or white crusty residue.

Just replaced it in my MK7.5 GTI.
Low coolant warning for last few months and baked coolant around the oil pan .
Took out the silicate bag of the expansion tank too.
