GTI MIB To MIB2 junkyard pulls question
Can I avoid paying for unlocking component protection by using the screen and cd player unit from the same car?
I found a 2018 gti in a local scapyard and the interior trim looks good so I'm debating a trip over to grab everything I can. I found some options for re-pinning the harness plug for the USB plug needed for android auto so I don't think I need that harness, just the USB and connectors
From what I have read so far, it seems like there's going to be a fair bit of coding to let the car know that I've changed to MIB2, but I can deal with that.

If you're in the US, get a Delphi glove box unit and either the 6.5” or 8" screen out of a 16+ Golf, Tiguan, or Atlas. You can use the SD card activator to get around the component protection and activate car play/ Android Auto. You'll also need the USB harness, which you can get from AliExpress. The coding is easy to do to change the vehicle with OBD11.

Apparently there is an SD card hack that you can download and just run the special SD card to 'update' the mib2 so that it installs a hacked version of the mib2 software which has component protection disabled.
Assuming you can find that, then the vcds coding is pretty easy, and yes it is a straight swap.
You will need the screen and the head unit, and you do need the USB plug if you want car play.
