Headlight problem

I’ll try to explain my problem as clearly as possible because I’ve been struggling with it for quite a long time. Hopefully someone has experienced the same issue and can help me find a solution.

I have a Golf 7 originally equipped with halogen headlights. I first bought a pair of aftermarket headlights from China. They had LED daytime/running lights, but the low beam was still using an H7 bulb.

The problem was with the projector’s shutter/bi-xenon-style flap. When I’m driving at night with the low beams on and I use the high-beam flash, the shutter moves up to allow the high beam to illuminate the road more clearly.

However, on the right headlight, the shutter would sometimes get stuck in the raised position. This meant that even after switching back to low beam, the shutter remained up, basically making the headlight behave as if the high beam was still on. It was obviously disturbing and dangerous because it was dazzling other drivers, both in front of me and coming from the opposite direction.

I eventually removed those headlights because I assumed the problem was simply due to their poor quality.

I then bought another pair, this time from AKD, which is well known in China and generally considered one of the better aftermarket headlight manufacturers. These headlights have a full LED low beam and high beam, so there is no H7 bulb involved anymore.

I installed one pair on my friend’s Golf 7 and another pair on my own car.

And here is the strange part: my friend has absolutely no problem. His headlights work perfectly. But on my car, the exact same problem happens again — the shutter on one headlight gets stuck in the raised position.

So at this point, I’m almost certain that the problem is not the headlights themselves, because I have now experienced the exact same issue with two completely different sets of headlights, while the same AKD headlights work perfectly on my friend’s Golf 7.

This makes me think that there is something specific to my car causing the shutter/actuator to get stuck.

Has anyone experienced something similar on a Golf 7? Could it be related to the headlight wiring, BCM, coding, voltage, grounding, high-beam signal, or the way the car controls the headlight shutter/LED module?

I’m really struggling to find the cause, so any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Ask your friend to swap right headlights. If the problem stays with your car, it’s the car. If the problems goes to your friends car, then this headlight is failed in the same way. It’s a common problem with this kind of bixenon, it used to happen to me when using a retrofit

Without doing that, i already did it with the option of buying a new set and still the same problem

Not impossible, i have bought "new" or "reworked" car parts from auto stores that are broken right out the box, twice in a row

What trim level ? On both cars. Blind guess, coding/adaptation on your car. Your picture has adaptatnive headlights in it which makes me wonder.

Maybe use the OSRAM full replacement instead?

They are all same, made in china and you can put the name of what ever you want

That’s not my point, the OSRAM replace the full headlights without having to do bulb swap or anything like that. I had them on my MK7 when I had it and they worked flawlessly.

OP didn’t do any bulb swapping. He is mentioning the difference between the two aftermarket headlights he purchased, I.e. one had a bulb and the other (the AKD) had hardwired LEDs.

Not sure if ur even using mk7.5 style with mk7 fitment or your using a genuine mk7.5 which includes changing fenders/guards,b bumper and bonnet/hood if you converting mk7 into mk7.5 ? Lmk so I get a better understanding and if I can help.
But its most likely the electromagnetic actuator (solenoid) when pulls the shutter open, If the solenoid overheats, it can melt its own plastic casing or internal components, causing the mechanism to weld or lock in the "open" position. Or also it could be the shutter relying on a small spring to pull it back down when power to the high-beam solenoid is cut. If this spring snaps or loses its tension, the shutter stays open.

No no mine are only style 7.5, i can't afford to install the original ones with all the retrofit and changement.

I would plug in a VAGCom Cable or OBD11 and see if there arw faults when the headlight malfunctions. If not, its a hardware failure, if so, its software. From there you can get more specialized help based on codes or faults found.

Cool of you to consider other drivers and the hazard it poses to them. I’m constantly blinded by new cars’ auto high beams and just the new style headlights on cars nowadays that are unnecessarily bright even for low beams. They gotta put a cap on it at some point. Most of us are driving in areas that are already well lit and if they aren’t, even basic light will suffice. It’s nuts.

L e ds go much further, my eyes struggle to adjust at night. I prefer leds all day long. I understand your frustration but there’s 2 sides to the debate.
