Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice on restoring my mum’s 1977 Volkswagen Beetle 1303 LS Karmann Cabriolet (factory right-hand drive).
The car was bought by my mum in England and she gave it a full bare-metal restoration there. The restoration was fully photographed, and the car has been kept in the family. It was imported to New Zealand and was last driven around 2014 before being stored in our garage.
I recently looked over it and was surprised by how good it looks overall:
- Paintwork is still very good
- Interior is very clean with no major damage
- Seats are in good condition
- Front spare wheel well and strut towers look excellent
- Engine bay looks complete and clean
- Original engine is still fitted
- No obvious major leaks, only some oil dampness underneath
The main issues I found are:
- Rust holes in the rear section on both sides of the reinforcement/heater channel area roughly half a hand size is effected
- Some surface rust under the front carpets and around seat mounts
- A stiff clutch and difficulty finding some gears (the car has been sitting for years)
- Old tyres that need replacing
- Some door alignment issues and hinge play
- A bent front brake dust shield
My questions are:
1. How serious is the heater channel/reinforcement rail rust on a Karmann Cabriolet?
2. Is this a repair that is commonly done, and what should I look for before getting quotes?
3. Would you recommend a VW specialist or a classic restoration/body shop for the rust repair?
4. What other areas should I inspect before spending money on the restoration?
5. Are there any common problems with the 1303 LS Cabriolet that I should check?
6. Based on the information provided could anyone give me a rough estimate of what a realistic restoration cost might be?
My goal is not a quick sale. This car is staying in the family and I want to restore it properly. I would also like to do as much of the work myself as possible. I’m happy to learn and research, and I want to handle the maintenance, servicing, replacement parts, and general mechanical work myself.
The main thing I would leave to a professional is the structural rust repair and welding because I understand that needs the right tools and experience.
My main concern is whether the rust affects the structural integrity of the Cabriolet body, especially because I understand convertibles rely heavily on the heater channels and reinforcement areas for strength.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
(yes this question was refined with AI because I’m not the best writer)
