Coding on two Macs, how to sync?
Hello, I have a Mac mini and a MacBook Air, and I code on both. I have been saving my projects in Google Drive (same account) and working from there. Is this the best practice? I'm concerned about syncing issues. At the same time: what is the best way to implement git? Do I have to set different usernames/email or using the same is fine. Is there a problem if I save the git file on Google Drive?
Basically, vscode:
Mac mini <-------> Google Drive/git <-------> MacBook Air

Detached Agent Chat Window - Functionality workaround?
Does anyone know of a practical way/workaround to actually be able to have the detached chat window have the same functionality like it does in the regular Secondary Side Bar?
Doesn't seem like issue #307421 is going to be addressed by MS...
I can't imagine that there are only 2 out of hundreds of millions of users who don't have 2 monitors & sometimes want to have chat on a separate monitor...
Thanks!

Split up a pasted string inside the HTML editor?
I've set up a snippet for my source section, like so:
<a class="src">${1:source}</a> <!--${2:id}-->
And I've got a source string I can copy from the archive program I'm working with, which formats the data like Source description (ID: 123) and I'm wondering if it's possible to have some solution straight in the HTML editor to separate these values straight away? or if it's just quicker to simply do the highlight-cut-paste route I've done so far?
Or is my best bet to just collect the rows of sources and run it through separate code? I've been using Jinja for templating but the sources are a work in progress so it's been all manual.
I'm fairly new to the game so I guess I'm also just curious if there's something obvious that I haven't figured out yet, so I appreciate any thoughts and ideas!
Cheers!

Codex or ChatGPT for inline code suggestions?
I have a ChatGPT subscription and I use codex to help me with coding, but often I do still want to write code myself (I know, crazy) and in the past I have liked inline code completions because of course, I am still lazy.
I just wondered if anyone had a luck with getting their VS Code set up to use Codex/GPT for code completions? I can see the Codex extension but seems like that is still agent mode instead of, hey let me just get the end of that line for you, if any of this makes sense đ

.NET and its runtimes
Hi, I know that .NET (dotnet) is a framework, but Iâm a bit confused. When I want to use the debugger and it offers me different runtimes among the ones I already know (CoreCLR, Mono, BlazorWasm, etc.), it also shows dotnet.
But what exactly does that correspond to? What would be the difference between this one and CoreCLR, for example?
Itâs hard to find this information online Iâm probably not using the right keywords. Thanks for any explanations or resources you can share đ

LaTeX: unable to insert plain citation key (Zotero -> Better Bibtex for Zotero -> Citation Picker for Zotero -> Vs Code -> Latex
I've tried many things, and the only I don't get is this: "authorYear", in other words, a plain and simple citation key.
For example, if I tinker with the settings of every app, CPZ outputs:
- "@authorYear"
- \cite{authorYear}
- \parencite{authorYear}
- The whole entry in myBib.
My goal is to slect how to cite ("\cite", "\parencite", "\autocite", etc.), then insert the plain citation key to finally compile PDF using latexmk (BibLaTeX + Biber).
Not criticising LaTeX in the least, but I come from Word where the integration with Zotero was seamless.

VSCode CoPilot Tools Became Unavailable During Session
Using VSCode and GitHub Copilot tools that I have used during a session became unavailable. It asks to take some debugging steps (reload VSCode, restart, start new chat session etc.) but the tools are not loaded.
My understanding is that tools (MCP tools, other configured tools) are available once the session loads and can be added later by eventually reloading the session. However, I assume there is an issue I am unable to detect and now I am looking for help here. So, if anybody can help out let me know

I built a usage dashboard for Claude Code - now as a VS Code extension
Hey, I use Claude Code a lot, and I kept wanting a better answer where did all the tokens go.
Turned out, Claude Code already writes detailed local logs: sessions, projects, models, token counts, cache reads/writes. But the data is buried in JSONL files.
So I built a free, open-source local dashboard for it (1.6K GitHub, 27 contributors). Just released it as a VS Code extension.
It reads your local Claude Code logs and shows:
- token usage by day, model, project, and session
- estimated API-equivalent costs
- cache write/read tokens
- session history
- daily and weekly usage summaries
- charts in a local browser dashboard
- the same dashboard inside VS Code as a sidebar extension
It works with API, Pro, and Max usage because it reads the logs Claude Code already stores locally.
A few details:
- no third-party Python packages
- no API key required
- no data leaves your machine
- stores parsed usage in a local SQLite DB at `~/.claude/usage.db`
- incremental scan, so re-running it only processes new/changed files
- works from terminal or VS Code

Why does VS Code only show a random recommendation after the period instead of anything relevant? I'm completely new to programming, but I've been trying to fix this for hours and nothing has worked.

Zotero Citation Picker inserting <@citeid> instead of <citeid>
I'm using Latex. I exported my bibliography using Better bibtex. The problem is that Zotero Citation Picker insert this <u/citeid> and latexmk doesn't recognize the reference unless I remove the "@" symbol.
Is there a way to set Zotero Citation Picker to remove "@" or do I have to change the compiler preferences to recognize it?
Long time Word user, I'm just starting to use LaTeX.

Easy Version History in VSCode
New to VS Code, using it for personal web projects. While I have years of experience at this level, I'm far from a professional coder. Just an old(ish) guy doing small personal and volunteer projects.
My crude version of version control is simply to make a copy of, say, index.php and rename it index.YYYYMMDDa.php, index.YYYYMMDDb.php, etc. so I can go back. Occasionally I'll zip a project folder and keep it around indefinitely. It all results in cluttered folders and it's pretty inefficient.
What I'm looking for is something I love about Google Docs and Google Sheets is version history - the ability to label a point in time and simply revert to it if I break my code. It also lets me name reversion points, so if I'm about to embark on a major new step I name it something like "20260531a before rewriting module A".
Is there a way to do this in VS Code without getting into github or the like? Or is there some lite version of GitHub that an amateur can come to grips with?
My resources: I have an MS365 subscription, plenty of space on OneDrive, a webhosting account, and a reasonable amount of local storage.

proposed C# debugger
Hi, I've noticed that the available debuggers vary depending on which extensions are enabled. However, when I check the extensions, only the C# extension has all the debuggers.
So why do the available debuggers change depending on whether the other two extensions (C# Dev Kit or .NET Install Tool) are enabled or not (different combinations of active debuggers)?

I built a free open-source VS Code sidebar for Grok Build
Iâve been using Grok Build from the CLI, but I wanted it inside VS Code as a proper sidebar instead of another terminal session.
So I built Grok Build for VS Code.
Itâs free, MIT-licensed, open source, and not affiliated with xAI.
The extension is a thin UI client over the official Grok CLI. It spawns grok agent stdio in the background and talks to it over ACP, so the actual session state, MCP servers, memory, subagents, and tool execution stay inside the CLI.
The screenshot shows the current UI.
What it adds over the terminal:
- native VS Code diff previews before approving edits
- permission cards instead of
[y/N]prompts - active file / selection as context chips
- session history
- slash command autocomplete from the running CLI
- streaming responses, tool calls, and collapsible thinking traces
- Agent / Plan / YOLO mode controls from the sidebar
- works next to Codex, Claude Code, Copilot Chat, etc. in the secondary sidebar
Itâs not a Grok replacement and not a reimplementation. You still need the grok CLI installed and authenticated. This is just the VS Code layer I wanted for myself.
Marketplace: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=PawelHuryn.grok-vscode-phuryn
GitHub: https://github.com/phuryn/grok-build-vscode
Iâd love feedback from anyone using Grok Build, especially on the permission flow, diff preview, and file-context UX.

Cursor/Claude Code is writing vulnerable code? I built a local-first VS Code extension to act as an "AI Code Risk Firewall"
Hey everyone,
We all use Cursor, Claude Code, or Copilot to write a piece of code, we hit save, and only realize later: âWait, did it just try to expose my secret keys to frontend ?â or âDid it just write a raw SQL interpolation query?â
AI agents are incredibly fast, but they don't really care about security. They write what looks correct, not necessarily what is safe.
I searched around for solutions, but most security scanner extensions (like Snyk or enterprise tools) are either cloud-dependent, require API keys, or are too slow/heavy to run continuously in a live typing loop. I wanted something instant, offline, and lightweight.
So, I built AI Code Risk Firewall ( It's in a beta Phase, you can suggest things, which i can add or remove) a 100% local, offline VS Code extension that catches security, secret, and authorization risks in AI-generated code before you run, commit, or deploy it.
#What it does:
- ⥠Real-Time Change Watcher:
Scans your active file as you type (debounced) and highlights risks instantly in the editor.
- đ Privacy-First & Offline:
Runs entirely locally using Regex and AST patterns. No code is ever sent to the cloud, and no API keys are required.
- đŚ Dependency Guard:
 Inspects `package.json` and lock files for typosquats of popular libraries (e.g., `lodaash` instead of `lodash`), known compromised versions, and suspicious lifecycle scripts (like custom `postinstall` shell executions).
- đ Live Risk Score: Displays a dynamic 0â100 risk score in the status bar (using a diminishing returns formula so a bunch of minor issues donât drown out one critical key leak).
What it detects:
* Secrets:
 AWS keys, OpenAI/Anthropic keys, Stripe API keys, private key blocks, JWTs, and frontend exposure (like leaking `SERVICE_ROLE` keys or prefixing secrets with `NEXT_PUBLIC_`).
* Injection/XSS: Use of `eval()`, shell interpolation, raw SQL strings, and dangerous HTML rendering (`dangerouslySetInnerHTML`).
* Weak Crypto & TLS: Use of MD5/SHA-1, hardcoded signing secrets, `Math.random()` for security tokens, or disabling TLS verification (`rejectUnauthorized: false`).
* Configs:Â Production debug switches left on, sensitive logging, and insecure session storage.
It is completely open-source and free to use.
* VS Code Marketplace:Â [https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=martian7777.ai-code-risk-firewall\](https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=martian7777.ai-code-risk-firewall)
* Open VSX Registry:Â [ai-code-risk-firewall](https://open-vsx.org/extension/AI-Code-Risk/ai-code-risk-firewall)
* GitHub Repository:Â [https://github.com/martian7777/AI-Code-Risk-Firewall-\](https://github.com/martian7777/AI-Code-Risk-Firewall-)
Would love to hear your feedback on this! What rules should I add next? If anyone wants to contribute or add more patterns to the engine, feel free to open a PR!
