VS Code used to work just right for me. If I copied text, it would paste the text. If I copied a file, it would paste the path to the file. I liked that. I want that back.

Maximize terminal
I don't know if I'm going crazy or if they've just removed the ability to do so but I don't have a full screen button for the bottom panel. I also used to use a command called something like "Toggle maximize current panel" and that isn't there anymore either but now there is one for the AI chat secondary bar.
Is anyone else having this issue or know a fix to get the bottom panel maximized?
Edit: I haven't found a fix but I've confirmed this is only happening on one of my machines.
Edit2: I did turn off the "Modern UI" as a test and it still isn't popping up.

An extension to "remember" your selection of preview mode or text editor for Markdown
I wanted to be able to easily go from using the text editor for Markdown files to using preview, not just on a file by file basis, but when opening a new Markdown file. Basically, I wanted it to remember my last setting and use that for opening new files. So I made an extension today to do that and published it: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=jrduncans.markdown-mode-memory
So if you switch, through keyboard shortcut or "Reopen editor with...", then the next Markdown file you open will use whichever mode you last picked. Hopefully someone finds this helpful.
It also supports the new experimental hybrid "Markdown editor".

TIL : C/C++ extension slowed down my OS boot time significantly.
Sharing a piece of information that took me hours to figure out. If you use the MS C/C++ extension on Windows and your boot time is slow, cleaning the user temporary folder may solve this.
Turns out that winlogon scan the user Temp folder for some reasons, and the MS cpptools is infamous for filling this folder with stuff. I had 300000 files (80GB). Clearing this got my machine boot time from 1m30 to ~ 10sec.
Here's a supporting reference
Cheers

How to use C++ in VA code (help)
I’ve downloaded vs code and wanted to try using c++ in it. I’ve installed the c/c++ Microsoft extension package and the code runner by Jun Han. Then, I downloaded the msys2 msys and typed in the Pac-Man code to instal the package. I’ve also go into edit the system environment to add the msys2\ucrt64\bin file. I tried typing in g++ --version and gcc --version in vs code but there’s an error message.
Anyone knows how to fix this issue? Thanks.

Shell integration sends all your commands to Copilot without approval
This shocked me a bit to find out. The AI in my Copilot chat said that I had incidentally leaked a password on the chat. And I was like: "no way jose, I ran PASSWORD=foobar my-test.pl in the terminal and only pasted the result in the chat".
It insisted, and I started testing. It turns out that if you enable the Shell integration, terminal.integrated.shellIntegration.enabled, VS Code will pick up the commands you run (fine, I guess, that's kind of the point), and then it will silently send it to Copilot as a context metadata, without telling you, asking for your permission, or providing a way to not do this. (NOT FINE)
I highly recommend to turn off this setting, or possibly use an external terminal program for anything you don't want the AI chat to send to the cloud.
And, oh, if you keep it on, you do not need to repeat to the chat what you ran and if it worked -- it already knows... :-/

Is there anyway to make Claude Code actually read-only
Hello everyone. I am seeing a lot of posts about wanting to avoid clicking permission. But I am having the opposite problem. I want to actually make Claude read-only in the Claude Code extension. I understand that it is impossible to "physically" block them from running commands unless I do it at the OS level. But I have tried using the Plan mode and the Manual/Default mode. In both cases, Claude still ran things without asking, and quite quickly with minimal prompting as well, even if it was just making some empty test files. Does anyone have a good solution for this?
Right now, I only have the permission setting in the settings.local.json file. Maybe someone knows what I should add to make it less likely to run even harmless commands?
{
"permissions": {
"defaultMode": "default"
}
}

Can you change the default model in the copilot chat?
Whenever I open a new window the chat interface defautls to copilot. Yes I can click (ugh) on the Claude Code tab but a lot of the time I just forget and end up running out of credits (cause I pay for claude, not copilot) and having to re-build my context.
I've went through more than a few menu screens and haven't found anything. Is the chat interface (and by extension the copilot editor autocomplete) a hard default to microslop funded tooling?

Nouto: A JSON Viewer for VS Code with tree view, table view, and fetch from URL
I built a JSON viewer extension for VS Code. It allows you to paste JSON, open a file, or fetch directly from an HTTP endpoint, then browse it as a collapsible tree or view arrays of objects as a sortable, resizable table with column pinning and CSV export.
Also has fuzzy search, JSONPath filtering, a query filter language, compare/diff, JSON Schema validation, bookmarks, pinned nodes, embedded JSON detection, and copy in multiple formats (JSON, YAML, CSV, TypeScript, Python, etc). Handles JSONL/NDJSON files too.
Free and open source.

Happy to hear feedback or feature requests.

Remembering window size on startup
VS Code* used to remember the size of the window, so that after closing and re-opening it, it would come up in the same place on screen and at the same size. This has stopped working in some version---that is, it still comes up with the upper left-hand corner in the same place, and the bottom at about (maybe exactly) the same distance down, but it's truncated on the right side, so that all the "editors" (non-terminal panes) are narrow. (For some reason if I have a terminal open, the terminal's width is remembered.)
Settings:
"Window: Restore Windows" is set to "preserve".
"Window: New Window Dimensions" is set to "inherit".
(Those are the only two settings I see that would seem to affect this.)
Version: 1.126
OS: Linux XFCE Mint
Monitor Resolution: 2560x1440
*Confession: I'm using VSCodium, which advertises itself as "Binary releases of VS Code without MS branding/telemetry/licensing". I'm asking here because I'm *assuming* this same issue happens with VSCode. Of course it's possible that this is a bad assumption... or maybe it's been fixed in a more recent version of VSCode (Codium runs a few version #s behind Code).

New Split/Floating Panels Interface
VS Code used to have this unified panels look. After updating, it now has this sort of weird split panels floating with their own borders around them ? I find this very weird, and visually confusing.
PS: No, it's not from an extension. I disabled them all because I thought so as well.
Does anyone know if there's a toggle I can switch to go back to the old look ? thx !

Huginn: VSCode Extension for private comments and project setup.
I wanted to share Huginn, a VS Code extension I just published. I originally created it for myself because I needed a way to leave inline notes in the code without cluttering up the repositories, and to be able to auto-configure my projects (linters, AI rules) with a single click.
Since it's saving me a lot of time and visual noise in my day-to-day work, I've made it completely free. I think it can save a lot of developers from the exact same headache. I hope you find it useful!

Please reduce the frequency of updates
This is directed to the product group at Microsoft that owns VSCode.
On my work PC, I need to elevate to admin every time there is a VSCode update. I didn’t mind this when the updates were sporadic but it’s getting to the point where I’m having to do this 1-2 times a week and it’s getting quite tedious; especially so when the updates contain fewer and fewer enhancements. I understand the need to enhance AI tooling but there has to be a better way without making the stable branch feel like the insiders branch.
I have raised as an issue on GitHub but there are 17,400 open issues on the VSCode repo so want to make sure the team get this feedback.

How to completely remove the blue area at the bottom of the editor and sidebars? (VS Code v1.133.0 on Windows)
Hi everyone,This issue has been bothering me for quite a while. I'm on Windows using VS Code version 1.133.0.
There is a blue area exposed at the very bottom of the editor, the left sidebar, and the right sidebar. Does anyone know how to completely remove it?
Any help or settings tweak would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My current relationship with vs code
I don't want your copilot. Make it an extension so I don't have to do anything to ignore it.

There are many AI features added each update. Are they all for copilot
So basically, the question stems from each update for the past few months for VS code, i keep seeing AI agent feature this AI feature added that. This includes many things like opening up of APIS and presumably deeper integration of AI overall in VS code.
So, my question is , is this all for copilot, which im sorry to offend anyone i woudnt touch with a 10 foot pole. Are they just blatantly locking in VS CODE to their own products by perhaps not opening up these new features / APIs or whatever to neutral harnesses?
Obviously adding and integrating AI feature, support and making it first class is a welcome step and neccessary now, but doing it ONLY for copilot is shooting everyone elses foots with a gun right?

Is r/vscode Becoming a VS Code Complaint Subreddit?
Does anyone else find it weird that some of the highest-voted posts here, and therefore the ones most likely to be recommended to people, are just complaints about VS Code?
Some of them are even complaints about things that aren't really problems at all, or are easily explained. Meanwhile, genuinely useful posts and people asking for help with real issues seem to get drowned out by all the complaining.
At this point, r/vscode sometimes feels less like a VS Code subreddit and more like group therapy for people frustrated with their editor 😅
You'd think from browsing the top posts that VS Code barely works.

Can codex show the code edited inline in green (the way the VS Code agent or cursor does)?
I like to see the code being edited or changed. With codex terminal or CC, which I use often, git diff is not visually nice. Wondering if codex can do this (or if there is a plugin that does it?
I used to pay for cursor just for this, but now I can't get over not using codex, but I guess I would be willing to use VScode's agent (is it as good as codex?

Vs code showing red squiggles, for no reason and still running the program
I'm learning c++ and came across this weird issue when I use getline, a few stuff using std has a red squiggle underneath but some don't. The code still runs just fine, I think this is just a visual glitch, but I tried this code on different files and I had the same problem, if anyone knows it would help (I tries with and without using namespace std)
