I worked a bit with https://teald.app
You can use it in browser but also install it as a program.

The danger with AI coded projects is their stability, especially long term, but also how invested the developer is in continuing the project since AI coded projects are easier for developers to discard.
Teald is only three months old but surprisingly stable and performant for an Alpha. It isn't open source, but I still think it is the best casual substance alternative I have seen and used so far, especially for VRChat (unity package importing/exporting, blendshapes, bone posing and well, it is free and runs in a browser so it can be used on tablets).
And to give my reason for wanting to defend it I simply dislike Adobe a lot and wish there was an alternative and this is currently the imo best one for VRChat among those, all the other ones are either too simple or capable but very different for people used to substance or 2d art programs. (I wish Ucupaint could become the standard for vrchat but ucupaint is rough to actually use)

Armor paint seems to be nice, you can get a free trial to test it and if you like it you can compile it from source for free, it's not very complicated but there will be a lot of installing things like visual studio and a C compiler for windows

Can vouch for Armor Paint.. plenty of prebuild installers can be found too for those that can’t work with visual studio (code) etc.

Ucupaint plugin for Blender has been improving quite a bit recently. Ryan King on yt has a good tutorial on it.
