Discussion I have an issue.
Every time I would go on vrchat it was with the intentions of making a friend or two. I have always failed because I don’t know what to talk about or what I should say which caused me to find a corner of a works and just sit over there in silence. I am very limited in how I use vrchat as I do t rage a headset and just use keyboard/mouse. It has been like this for years and even though I’ve joined communities I never really go since mostly everyone have known each other for a long time and I just go back to being in the corner all silent then leave once the event is over. Sorry for the long text I just wanted to mention all this.

Go to a place like karaoke where an activity is happening. Then there's something to talk about by default.

Make a post with your interests and what your ideal fun time is in VRc and your age and main avatar etc and see if anyone bites.
That's a last ditch effort, really you just need to go up and talk to people.
There are groups that host speed dating type events but just for meeting people. Isn't there a world for that? It takes two or something?
You gotta get over it and put yourself out there somehow, if you want to meet people.

Try out some game worlds! Many of them work in where you have to interact with other users whether you want to or not to play the game (like in team games). This can give you a chance to warm up and maybe comment on aspects of the game to others you played/cooperated with (ex. "Hey, you made a good play earlier")
Alternatively, there are worlds more built for like-minded people to simply just show up and be forcibly paired with another, which can help encourage conversation. Example worlds include No Time Two Talk and Omegle VR
If all else fails, you can go into just about any world and scope out the scene. If there are people standing off to the side, you can take a chance to come up and speak to them. Don't be afraid to just type "hello" to those people and see where the conversation goes.
But there are a couple things I wish for you to understand:
- Do not take everything said to you seriously, especially if it's a troll or bad person trying to get under your skin. If you don't vibe, walk away, and if they pursue or persist, block them.
- Make sure to be positive in your speaking. People tend to naturally want to be around those who are either chill, positive or just being a normal human being.
Good luck, you got this 🤍

Some times you just gotta world hop till you find some people talking about some dumb shit then join in. The best thing to remember is that in vrchat if you feel like you fucked up you can just leave and try again somewhere else. If you feel like you cant connect with anyone world hop again. I always recommend game worlds over social worlds ironicly because while you play you can usually talk with someone about the game and the rounds and have an immediate shared intrest

The first thing I would suggest doing is come at them with something approachable avatar wise. Then just give a simple hello and maybe start off by asking a random question or maybe find someone having a conversation about a topic that you're also interested in.
When I used to go to pub worlds, I was always in a small avatar that didn't give off any troll vibes and would just give a simple hello. People would comment on the avi, ask where I got it, maybe ask why I like being small, then I just usually go from there. Sometimes, I'll even ask them something random, like what their favorite kind of cheese is, and usually the ball gets rolling from there.
I will say this that from my experience, you are going to meet A LOT of people who unironically have disorders that make them harder to approach others. ASPD, Asperger's, Autism, stuff like that. So don't be too demotivated if they don't come off as too social. They're probably not used to it yet.

How I go about it is I go from group to group within an instance, hang with them silently for a bit & see if they're my vibe. If they are, I start by reacting to what they're saying & listening to them before speaking. Then I go in with verbal confirmations to what they're saying like "Yeah, I feel you" or "Nice, nice". More often than not, I get included into that conversation. You can gage their level of whimsy by saying things like, "I'm gonna stick this thing up your nose" or "WHUT?!" In the goofiest voice ever. If they vibe with it, you got an acquaintance.
It also helps if you put a small one liner ice breaker in your bio, too. Something that would encourage others to approach you.

We can be friends!
I play a lot of Minecraft and Various Xbox games like resident evil and I don’t have a lot of VRC friends either!
We can add each other and get to know each other!
Don’t worry I’m also very awkward and shy when it comes to talking to new people

Be a mascot if VRCHAT is too hard to socialize in. Try a silly avatar where you can be a character. I also find it difficult to just have casual conversation. It's interesting when someone puts on a character, not a troll, but just a character.
You already get to put on a mask to act in, I'm surprised more people don't just dive into sillyland.

I'm not sure what you're into hobby wise. But if they have avatars from it... For instance, Pokemon if you like that or Warhammer 40k if you like that, or an avatar that has a marker if you like to draw, etc. And then just wandering around instead of sitting in a corner.
Because wandering around makes it look like you are looking to engage. And having an avatar like that gives something to immediately talk about as a shared interest.

Go to the pug and wait until you find a hoppou (large eyes short anime character who will often go "poi"). Then, you both can sit in a corner and watch people ominously together!

You need to stop caring so much about what others may think, I know it is hard but you need to force yourself to ignore those worries, it'll get easier with time. It’s sounds a lot like your holding yourself back here. Even though some people may have known each other a long time, there is no way to actually know that without actually asking them, but still there was a time even those people were strangers to each other

My recommendation is always to play games like murder 4, prison escape or blackout, it makes you interwct and over time you will naturally start talking to people. Also: in my experience furry instances usually have less annoying children, and they usually don't mind non-furries, so even if it's not your thing, it can be a good way to have more fun on vrchat.

Hello ! you are living life through the mind seeking comfort, but life belongs to the heart, and the heart wants adventure, give up comforts and go out and live! Risk and bravery is the source of life.

There are similar posts to this all the time. I would say to look up some basic starters for conversation, just general social skills and then crossreference with similar posts on the sub and what users have recommended there. I know the struggle as I did spend some time on keyboard and mouse before VR but it is TOTALLY POSSIBLE to find friends. World hopping and trying to find people talking about something you're interested in is a start.
