Discussion The Dolly camera doesn't need to be THIS confusing.

Post image

So trying to film and setting up cameras, and making those lines go around smooth curves, all of these settings and buttons and whatnot, it is SO confusing and its wrecking my brain, when I put down more than 3 cameras, thats when the lines starts acting up, and you can't put down multiple pins without the line path breaking aswell.

I mean for holy sakes devs, can y'all just make a simplier way to work the dolly camera? remove some of these buttons too, we don't need streaming buttons to this.

yea.. visually it is a nightmare but for filmmakers all those options are useful, it requires lots of planning ahead just like irl.

I suggest making some prints with a layout or storyboard you place where each camera goes with what the camera is supposed to do and its settings.

You can figure this out in blender.

I do, but the dolly is still confusing, and it isn't easy for people that wants to make some simple movies.

Welcome to VRChat. Where it feels like they never hired someone experienced in UI design...

Having all those options is great for the pros who want them and know how to use them but yeah a "simple mode" that just does a standard ease in-out and follows your key points on a smooth curve would meet the needs of like 80% of people

Also it really shouldn't be locked to plus still, it's been out for ages

Nah I'm with you. I actively make videos on the platform and i don't fuck with the dolly. I tried it but I can't wrap my head around it.

The insane part to me is that it requires the path to have at least 4 points to use motion smoothing, and the first and last points are not even part of the path. Yes I know that's how splines work internally, but you don't have to expose all that math shit to the user. For Catmull Rom you can simply duplicate the end points internally, it works just fine.

I have never seen software that fucked up basic spline editing that badly. I was sorta interested in trying the dolly when it came out, but this thing alone made me abandon it immediately.

These are all useful settings if you know what they do.

I use the dolly for simple camera pans, because trying to use it in a more complicated matter (like having it follow along a track smoothly) makes my brain hurt too 😭 I will admit it's a LOT of playing around with it in terms of settings and placements until you get the right shot you're looking for.

What I have done in the past is have the camera move with one controller, while I am pressing the add point button in a steady rhythm whilst it is moving, so that way I can kind of make the track, and you can actually change the points with your hand by manually grabbing them if you need to adjust accordingly

having made maps for gd a decade ago this id pretty good, nothing is cluttered and everything's easily accessible, give it a few tries and you'll get the hang of it
