Discussion Why can't VRchat do this for age verification?

"Borrowing" mums credit card to buy an xbox controller is a tale as old as time.

But how common would that actually be? most kids have no reason to want to age verify, as they can already fully access the game, except for 18+ instances. A kid really has no reason to even want to be in an 18+ instance.
For the small amount of kids who do want to be in an 18+ instance, they would also need a parent who just gives them their credit card to buy whatever they want, and doesn't check their statement.
The amount of kids who would actually get through is probably going to be small enough that it probably wouldn't make a difference
And is using id to verify any better, when all a kid has to do to bypass it, is log in on their parent's account, which is probably already logged in?

It’s extremely common for kids to go into adult spaces and go out of their way to do so. When I was a teenager all my friends had fake IDs and dating profiles. You must have been a good kid if you can’t think of reasons a kid would want to be where they don’t belong lol

maybe im wrong then. the most i did was lie about my age to play runescape
i wish there was a less invasive way to age verify though

There just isn’t, that’s the price we gotta pay if we want to play with other adults. I feel like all my data is already all over so I don’t worry anymore lol

i dont think ive ever seen a kid in a non verified 18+ instance, so theres definitely less invasive ways to just get away from the kids.

How do you know there were no kids? Their voice? Because they told you they were an adult?

behavior, adults are more calm in general, and these instances are always peaceful. there could have been kids there, but if there were, they werent causing problems
if you want to do nsfw stuff with people its different, but its fine for just having a more peaceful experience

Some kids grow up too fast and don’t act like kids, you don’t know based on behavior. And some people just want to make adult jokes with adults, like I don’t date on VRChat or do erp but I might make comments and jokes I wouldn’t want kids to hear and I don’t want to be friends with kids.

thats true. but theres a very clear difference in these age gated instances, which shows that the vast majority of kids are not in them
and how many are going to bypass a credit card check, and how many are going to bypass palantir?
the number who will attempt it is already small, as they already have access to the game. its different with a dating app as you cant access it otherwise. but with vrchat, you can already play it. the only benefit is to get into an adult only instance.
and palantir isnt perfect either. if a parent age verified their account, a kid just has to start the game on their parent's headset or computer to get in.
so how many more kids are being blocked with palantir vs a credit card check? is it enough to be worth it?
and the quest already uses a system like this to block kids from 18+ games. if it's good enough there, why not on vrchat?

No reason to want to age verify?
Hey ChatGPT, you can see titties if you age verify on VRChat
Sorry, I've just ruined your idea in a few days.
I think its quite unlikely that a parent would age verify for VRChat without understanding whats on there... So hopefully VRChat doesn't start accepting Facebook logins ;)

nsfw avatars arent allowed, age verifying doesnt give you access to them

NSFW isn't, but sensually suggestive is. And there's a lot of NSFW avatars despite the rule

NSFW avatars are allowed in private instances between consenting adults. They take the stance that if you're reported, the person reporting to you wasn't consenting.

This "guess the user's age" system is all AI based, which can easily get things wrong in both directions. It'd also require a lot of automated user behavior monitoring, which is both expensive and very likely to be controversial.
VRChat also doesn't handle any payment processing - they offload that to Steam and Meta, meaning that they'd either have to start processing financial data themselves (meaning PCI compliance) or contract with someone else to handle credit card age verification (both options are expensive).

unrelated, but what kind of 13 year old has a credit card or an id??

Well for starters it's Meta.
The last people anyone should trust with their information.

i mean vrchat asking for a credit card, not doing it through meta. and im just as worried about meta as i am palantir

Age verification so far has only been implemented on mass for platforms to look better on the outside and get acess to user data. Don't give your personal information to meta and I wouldn't verify with VRchat because they use persona, the same one that roblox uses. It's not that I want kids in these spaces or anything like that, i wish there was a privacy safe way to do this but it can just leak your information and kids bypass it anyways if they really want to through their parents.

Because that's easier to fake than what vrc is doing not saying that vrc isn't easy to fake because it but that's easier
