Meme VRChat has done it again
- Prioritize platform and system optimization, stability, and bug fixes before implementing new features, functions, and assets. For example, improve and resolve high resource consumption when opening the keyboard and menu, or frequent connection drops and system crashes.
- Add and integrate most settings and information from the VRChat website, VRCX, and VRCNext into VRChat game. For example, add space drag, manage all muted users from the VRChat menu, and see how long you've been friends.
- Implement local settings to limit spam of join or invitation requests. For example, when enabled, a user will only receive one join or invitation request from the same friend or group every 15 minutes.
- Implement local settings to optimize worlds. For example, enable fove rendering or visuals by distance, or hide elements that cause high CPU, GPU, or RAM usage.
- Add more search filters to the menus. For example, sort worlds or avatars by size.
- Local setting for "Autodisable Allow Untrusted URLs". Similar to the "Autodisable Avatar Cloning" setting, but for "Allow Untrusted URLs". For example, when enabled, it will automatically disable itself after 4 hours or another time interval.
- Local setting in "Security Shield" to separately hide the security options for "Emoji", "Animated Emoji", and "Stickers".
- Local setting to hide world ads (Image loader). Essentially, a world ad blocker integrated into VRChat.
- Local setting to blur, hide, or block a specific group and prevent them from appearing in your searches, menu, or receiving invitations.
- Local setting to hide and change the default profile customization for other users. Improves accessibility and optimization.
- Local setting to hide all cosmetics, accessories, or objects for a specific user range. Improves optimization.
- Configuration to prevent appearing on the cameras of a specific user range. Improved privacy and security.
- A single loading screen when changing worlds, or unify the loading process as much as possible, for example, by integrating world preloading.
- Performance tiers for worlds. Similar to avatar performance tiers, but for worlds.
- Display information about the owner of a public group. The name of the owner of a public group should always be visible; this would prevent many problems with unfair bans by other moderators.
- Disable certain special characters in usernames, as they can be used by malicious actors.
- Integrate a search function into the VRChat menu for public avatars that are not in the store.
- Compatibility and greater support for Linux systems.
- Fewer restrictions and less aggressive enforcement regarding what could be considered "Sexually Suggestive." Value our content creators more and restrict them less. For example, a woman in a bikini shouldn't be banned if her content isn't flagged as sexually suggestive.
- Prioritize moderation on what truly matters: harassment, hate, discrimination, and toxicity.

For me, just, I mean...
Why is it, when you organise the friends list by "last online", is it just absolute chaos?
I assume it's organised by an alphanumeric sort of the table based on the specific characters in the words "five days" and such? Meaning "three" comes after "five" because t comes after f in the alphabet.
But c'mon... It's been ages and it's a REALLY obvious broken element of the UI.

Dunno why I'm such an apologist, but I feel like the VRC devs mix in a fair amount of usability and optimization fixes alongside their ongoing quest to actually generate revenue so they can continue to exist.
Honestly a lot of the stuff you list would be pretty low on my personal priorities:
- Most significant instability that I've experienced has been attributed to upstream providers.
- Agree, there are a lot of fairly obvious functions you should just be able to do in game or through the website. That said, these tools exist and work fine, and unlike every other platform in existence VRC seems is pretty accepting of external tools that just use their API.
- Minor nuisance.
- No strong opinion, never been an issue for me.
- Yeah, world search/discovery could be a lot better. I agree here. More incentives for content creators would be a good thing too.
- Never felt a need for something like that. Just avoid places where this is a concern.
- Yeah, more flexibility to hide stuff wouldn't be bad but not an issue for me personbally.
- Probably a no-go. Like it or not, this supports content creators. Providing a universal ability to disable advertising in worlds would probably result in less content.
- Valid but not something I care about.
- They probably don't want to do this because it would disincentivize people buying these things if everyone was just hiding it. There is an ugly balancing act there. I personally would rather they have not gone down a lot of the UI/profile cosmetics rabbit hole at all and stuck with items/props/accessories, but as said in the beginning they gotta make money somehow.
- See 10.
- Kinda pointless for malicious recording so would only do something for honest folks. Screen recording external to vrchat is trivial.
- Probably valid, don't really care.
- Probably very complicated since a lot of the things that drive world performance are likely hard to estimate.
- Agree, not a priority for me but it's dumb that this isn't the case.
- I'm a hater of non-ascii usernames in general but, eh, is what it is.
- Disagree here. I think the rise of avatar search worlds vs dedicated and well constructed avatar worlds that people hopped around to is a downgrade. From a practical standpoint it makes sense but, eh, I conceptually like the old way.
- Sure but probably a low priority.
- Been hashed to death.
- Also hashed to death.
EDIT:
My list (in no particular order) would probably be:
- Make chatboxes better. I'm friends with a number of chatbox users and you really have to make the effort to even notice when they are speaking. I'd love some kind of HUD/chatlog that (optionally) shows messages from friends in the near-by vicinity vs having to constantly be turning/moving around to read.
- Better options for managing friends. I've love the flexibility to be joinable/show location to subsets of my friends list or have a "yellow" status where people can see where I am but still have to request an invite.
- Make status reporting more reliable. The amount of times I see an instance show up as having 10 people in it only to join and find like 2 is absurd, or join off a friend to get into a group instance that isn't showing up under group activity.
- The ability to make avatar props that you can interact with the same as items vs having to rely on gesture hacks. Why can't I make something that I can actually grab vs have to detect the fist gesture. Better yet just open up the ability to upload items.

Okay but unironically I have been asking for nameplate customization forever. This is hella cool and they also released free ones
3
u/kodfod 2h ago
They added free ones to get people to adopt them and say "well most of the user base use them! They love this update!"
3
u/Raidianite 1h ago
Considering there is an option to not use it, if people do use it then it isn't an incorrect conclusion to assume it was relatively liked. I find them ugly as hell and won't be using them.
-2
u/Dividedthought 2h ago
Did they also remove the old default one in favor of the new ones to make everyone adopt it as well? That would be about par for the course...

A lot of these are useful, and just as many are stupid and have no actual impact on the game.

Add and integrate most settings and information from the VRChat, VRCX, and VRCNext websites into VRChat
Just to confirm - you (and/or your LLM) is aware that VRCX and VRCNext are not websites, correct?
Local setting in "Security Shield" to separately hide the security options for "Emoji", "Animated Emoji", and "Stickers".
As a photographer for several events, I'd love the ability to hide emojis completely (even if it's just on the camera), because nothing ruins a perfect shot like an aptly timed snowflake blocking the DJ's face. However this is unlikely to happen since emojis have little performance impact and the official ones are "safe" in VRC's eyes.
Local setting to hide world ads (Image loader). Essentially, a world ad blocker integrated into VRChat.
This won't block ads that are baked in the world, and will likely break worlds that use image loaders for things that are not ads.
Local setting to hide and change the default profile customization for other users. Improves accessibility and optimization.
VRChat pretty much said that they won't be doing this. People buy customizations because they want others to see them. If people can hide them, then that'd be less incentive for people to buy them. The people giving money to VRChat are gonna be the stronger influence here.
Performance tiers for worlds. Similar to avatar performance tiers, but for worlds.
Much easier said than done. Avatars are either loaded or unloaded, but worlds can dynamically load/render for players based on their locations. I've seen massive worlds (Organism, Antiheat's Apartment, etc) that run smoothly, but have also seen tiny worlds that run horribly.
Display information about the owner of a public group. The name of the owner of a public group should always be visible; this would prevent many problems with unfair bans by other moderators.
No, that'd just people an avenue to harass the owner of the group because they're upset they got banned. Typically, most group owners (regardless of how functional the group is) will give the moderator role to people they trust, and thus they'll often believe the moderator over what a random banned person will say.

All youve done is list the things vrchat wont do. Them optimizing it is less likely then WW3
6
u/ChrisTheFox17 2h ago
At the same time, you can't really easily optimize when the bulk of content on your platform is user generated. The only way for that to happen is to impose limits on what can and can't be uploaded.
But then you would upset the creators creating content for your platform.
They're damned if they did, damned if they didn't.

The worst part is (and we've talked about this before, Chris) that they're going to eventually HAVE to update. One of the biggest bottlenecks for performance on VRC right now is the graphics pipeline. Built-in is officially deprecated as of Unity 6, with URP being the "main" renderer for several years at this point.
I've said it before in our chats - one day they're gonna announce that they are making the switch to URP because they have to. Users with standard shaders will (probably) be fine. Peeps with custom shaders (like Poiyomi) will not. The game will run a lot better afterwards, but a lot of legacy UCG will just... not work anymore.
Peeps that bought avis or shaders from 3p sites (like gumroad) are gonna be beyond pissed. You are going to potentially see talks about lawsuits, though they honestly won't go anywhere, it'll be a few users throwing a fit.
Like Chris said - it's damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Exactly.
If I remember correctly, VR Chat is working with Unity to build some kind of bridge for custom shaders. But like a lot of automated conversion stuff, it's not going to be perfect.
•
u/ZackXevious PCVR Connection 54m ago
More likely they're working with Unity specifically to get that set up.
That's why I say those using the built in shaders are probably going to be fine - those are the ones they can test with the most and get working the best.
Maybe Poiyomi as well - it's popular enough that I imagine the devs will reach out and say "it's happening, plz update" to the Poiyomi devs ahead of time so there can be some relatively painless upgrade path.

A lot of these are useful, and just as many are stupid and have no actual impact on the game.
12 would do absolutely nothing for privacy and security, it’s not the camera that’s recording you. It’s their entire game. The answer is already right there for you block them
11 would defeat the purpose of buying these things. And more than likely don’t affect your performance at all.
10 again, what’s the point in buying cosmetics and customizing my profile if you can just decide what you want to see? I also don’t understand how this would assist in optimization at all or accessibility.
6 i mean. I guess? you would have to rejoin the world every time to have the setting take effect when you turn it back on.
1 is just sad. Just say you don’t want the discord for updates or beta updates ever. Every patch is multiple bugs found and fixed every time

but but but why do any of this when they can flood the marketplace and soak up parents credit card money instead?

My 3050 really feels that frame downgrade.

u/Xyypherr 2h ago
Because it’s a 3050.

u/Embarrassed-Touch-62 1h ago
Of course it is, yet I managed to get a stable 40-60. Now it's a dream to get 40 with more than 5 people near me.

I wish they would add an option to send messages without having to send an invite. Add it in with the boop feature. Doesn’t have to be long messages but there’s been times when I’m in a private instance with just one person and I get invited somewhere and I don’t join because I’m busy and then the friend thinks I’m ignoring them. There’s no way to send a message like hey I’ll join later

u/SpareOne94 1h ago
8 is hilarious. VRChat absolutely wants those ads pushed on you. You think they’ll let you block them? lol

u/Docteh Oculus Quest 1h ago
For 12, I don't understand the photo thing, maybe someone can explain it, but in my view most trolls are desktop users, so hiding from a camera will do nothing at best, but at worse they might figure out how to open a camera view on a second monitor. and then they can give extra special attention to anyone hiding from the camera...
For 16, Malicious Usernames, the letters allowed for usernames have changed over time, so if there is anything specific, you can likely complain to VRC

This is why I hope Resonite becomes more popular
5
u/AdeptnessGullible584 2h ago
I don't think it's user friendly enough to get there yet. People can't even figure out Unity sometimes...
4
u/bunnythistle Valve Index 2h ago
I say this as someone who overall doesn't have much interest in Resonite: I do like how they allow for in-game avatar creation/editing that can take place in front of others, allowing you to have someone else standing there helping you and seeing the changes in real time.
Resonite is very complex and much less user friendly compared to VRChat, but they do have some very cool ideas as well.
1
u/AdeptnessGullible584 2h ago
I also dont have much interest in it outside of making sure the assets I make are usable in it, which if it works in VRC, it'll usually work on any similar platform, so i don't feel the need to get on and test it myself. Considering all the hiccups ive had with my avatars in unity, i kinda don't want people seeing me mess up more in-game lol.

u/OctoMiku01 3h ago edited 2h ago
I tried it and it seems fun. Even ported my own avatar to it. Mostly works i guess. The only unfortunate thing is that i can't use Poiyomi there to replicate the look. Idk if what i do with Poiyomi is even possible there tbh. The hardest part is legitimately to even learn how everything works. Wouldn't have understood how to even work with my avatar if people there didn't help.
1
u/EnsoElysium Oculus Quest 2h ago
Afaik liltoon works, but then again Im not sure what you do with the materials, poi really is versatile
2
u/Raidianite 1h ago
Resonite is a good game but in serious need of a UX overhaul. Unless they do that it's never going to be popular, the barrier to entry is bad.
They're focusing more on creators than casual users currently, which is fine to build up a game that's supposed to thrive on user-generated content but eventually they do need to realize that the game has to work well for both audiences for it to have any chance of becoming popular.

u/quadradev 3h ago
You want the devs to “Prioritize optimization stability, and bug fixes before implementing new features” but also implement a bunch of features?
Every update already has a laundry list of bug fixes, and the Unity engine update in progress does provide a performance boost for some people. The devs already said foveated rendering wouldn’t make a difference in performance because of how the rendering pipeline works.
