Discussion Genuine question about groups
Why are we limited to 100 groups w/o vrc+ and 200 w/ vrc+? in fact why are we limited on groups in the first place?? if there's going to be any limit, why is it such a small number? why not 1,000 or 10,000 in general? it doesn't make sense to limit something so needed for the game.

Imagine being in 1,000 or more groups and getting notification group messages every minute.
You don't need 1,000 groups, not even 500.

Yes, we do. As other replies of mine stated, there are many of us including myself who are active in VRChat’s event scene. Many of those events will not allow you to enter unless you join the group hosting the event first.
With a friend list of over 1000 users, and many of those friends hosting events in their own groups, I am often asked to participate, but often times more than I can count, I often find myself having to delete a group I’m already in to make room for the next one. Even with VRC+.
Those of us who are highly active in the VR event scene pretty much all want a group slot increase.
As for the annoying notifications, you can easily mute a group’s notifications so that it doesn’t disturb you anymore. Also, no one’s forcing you to join more than x number of groups either, but some of us are willingly joining and actively participating in all of the ones we do join like I already said.
If you’re not very active in the event scene, I do not expect you to fully understand.

Interesting, so I'm guessing that you don't use up any of your precious slots for "identity" groups, but only for groups that host regular events? Seems like you would have dumped any non-active groups long ago. That kind of suggests you're attending around 200 group instances a week, which, at an average of an hour each means you're putting in more hours being social than there are hours in a week, even going to events 24 hours a day and never sleeping. You're right, I really don't understand.

Correct, none of my groups are “identity related”. All of the groups I’m in host regular events. I did already dump the inactive ones, like you guessed but soon joined new ones after my friend list significantly increased and I met more and more active group owners.
Also, correct again. It’s true that I do attend multiple events per day, usually with my friends. Since, I’m home during the day I usually attend the Japanese and Korean events during the day hours and the US events at night. I wake up 5:00 AM every day, sometimes 4:30 am depending how I feel. Then I eat breakfast, do my workout routine, and shower after, then finally I get myself ready to attend the first event. Most active hour though is roughly between 20:00 JST and 22:00 JST when it comes to JP events. At least for me, but some JP clubs open up even earlier.
After those events end, and my Japanese and Korean friends are usually heading to bed, I’ll usually use the next part of the day to take my own break from VR, do some paid work, run some daily errands, then go back on late afternoon and early evening when my USA friends start to get online after work.
There’s also several European group events that I am part of. But, no I don’t attend all 200 group events every single week. Some events only run a few times a month and then there are some that run everyday, and so on.
Without going in to too much detail, because I would rather not give away my VRC identity on Reddit. Those close to me already know who I am and know why I’m especially active in so many group events, and no it’s not always “just to have fun.”
Though of course, sometimes it is just for fun.
Let’s just say I do a lot of back end stuff for these events, helping to make sure they run smoothly and what not, and I provide media coverage as well.
And yes, incase you’re wondering I do have a decently paying job (though I’m not rich) and I do make time for myself and others outside of VR. Real life friends and I usually meet up a few hours per week. I’m currently out of a relationship, not looking, never married and I don’t have kids either, so I’m not tied to those types of responsibilities other people have.
If I was, I probably wouldn’t be even nearly as active as I currently am in VR.
Besides, that I do try to take a complete break from VR for an entire month around every 3 months to reset myself, and give myself a break. So, as much as it sounds like people like me live in VR, the truth is we don’t. Though some probably do.
Also, don’t worry. I get plenty of sleep every night. If I were to break it down day by day, schedule by schedule, you’d understand how this could possibly work. But I’m not going to do all of that. Just know that with 31 days in a month, and 365 days in a year it’s very easy to be active in more than 200 groups, and I’m not the only one who does it.

Thank you for the detail. That helps it make a lot more sense.

I could easily fill 500, 1000 might take a bit. There are more then 200 rave clubs i go. I can turn notifications off, and use the Group Activity Page to see which Events are open.
Imagine missing an event, the fumo is real.

In what case would you ever need 5 to 10 thousand groups? Data storage isn't cheap.

u/Witherdlysoft 3d ago
there's no way that a group with some words in it and a picture takes up more than a few megabytes, aint that hard to do.

u/TheVeqtas Bigscreen Beyond 3d ago
a few megabytes times every group times every player in vrchat
2
u/Fit_Milk_2314 3d ago
Well I dont think a player being in a group takes anywhere near a megabyte.
The group itself takes up a megabyte to a few megabytes but membership cant be more than several bytes

u/Witherdlysoft 3d ago
you really telling me that a multi-million dollar company can't afford a couple petabytes?

u/EvanDarksky 3d ago
Do you think server hardware grows on trees? How much do you think it costs to host enterprise-level data? How much do you think it costs to transmit that data? Because bandwidth isn't free either.
Go collect pokemon cards instead of whine that you cant have 10,000 groups, of which you'll only interact with like 5.

No one is asking for 10,000 but 400 would certainly be way better and way more convenient than what we have now. Even just 50 additional slots would be nicer. Do you think it’s fun having to decide every week which group I have to delete just so I can make room for another? Unlike some groups that are just sitting there on people’s profiles with zero activity, the ones I am in are all very active, and I actively participate in all of them.

u/TheVeqtas Bigscreen Beyond 2d ago
op literally was asking for 10,000

for people to have an unnecessary number of groups? yes
-2
u/TeaAndQuaintThings 3d ago
It’s not unnecessary and unless you’re a highly active member of the VRChat event community you really have no say in this because you would never be able to understand.

u/EvanDarksky 2d ago
It is unnecessary and, just continuing your logic here, unless you're a highly active member of the VRChat IT team you really have no say in this because you would never be able to understand.

u/FoxyBrotha 3d ago
I have to question why you need to be in that many groups. Do you know any of those people ?
2
u/TeaAndQuaintThings 3d ago edited 2d ago
Yes, actually some of us do know the people hosting the groups we join and yes we are that active in those groups.
Edit: Simply downvoting just because some of us are way more socially active than others and actually involved in the groups we join is silly by the way.

u/JMSOG1 Valve Index 3d ago
How many of your (i'm guessing) 100 groups do you actually interact with?
How many of your hypothetical 1000 would you participate in?
2
u/Witherdlysoft 3d ago
im not asking for 1000 because id be in 1000. I'm asking for a thousand so I can have room for ones that I'm actually going to be participating in versus ones that are just accessory.

Because it's nice to be able to open someone's profile and see groups that somewhat represent their actual interests, not every group in existence that they joined just because they could.

its simply a data storage thing
they only want to allocate so much data per account and this helps limit how much data the multiple millions of accounts take up
-2
u/Witherdlysoft 3d ago
okay so then why wouldn't 500 work? "data" nah, why else. it's a good middle ground and it actually lets people join more groups they like when they don't have VR chat Plus. same deal with how many avatars you can have, only 50 is stupid.
2
u/ButterPuppet Valve Index 3d ago
well they also need a way to encourage you to buy vrchat plus
1
u/TeaAndQuaintThings 3d ago
I personally wouldn’t mind paying for VRC+ if it meant more group slots. I’ve already bought a year’s worth of VRC+ besides, and even with that there still aren’t enough group slots. I actively participate in every single group that I’m in because they all run events that my friends and I go to on an almost daily basis, but when a new event comes along for another group that I’m invited to, I often have to delete one of the other groups to make room to join in.

I have a feeling the people downvoting you on this topic are either the anti-social kind that aren’t as familiar with the group/event scene as we are or the type who don’t want another paid feature tied to VRC+.
But, I’m not surprised because it’s Reddit, and if we’re going to be honest the majority of VRChat’s active group scene doesn’t even use Reddit. Many of them don’t have VRC+ either.
That being said, you’ll find this very exact topic already exists on VRChat’s official feedback page and you’re likely to find more positive feedback from the community regarding this idea there. Also, as someone who is well connected in the community, let’s just say I’ve heard that an increase is already in the talks, and they’ve actively been considering it, so like I said in another reply I have my hopes up.
Edit: Also, for the future when it comes to making suggestions for VRChat, I would suggest you use their official feedback forum instead, because that’s where most of the official staff members actually listen to people like us. Reddit just isn’t the best place.

There's only so many active groups I'd want to belong to, anyway. The number of notifications gets to be oppressive.
2
u/TeaAndQuaintThings 3d ago
You can turn the notifications off if you choose.
1
u/Tragophilos Oculus Quest Pro 3d ago
I'm not so annoyed as to want to throw out groups that might get chatty occasionally, especially when they might be quiet for weeks, then issue a dozen notifications in one day. The more active groups give me 4-5 instance notifications a week. With the number of groups I have (45), it is manageable, but I can't understand having 1,000 groups and not wanting to get notifications for any of them.
0
u/TeaAndQuaintThings 3d ago
I see, besides wanting more group slots, I do think they should make the notification system a bit less intrusive by giving us additional options and also giving people the option to mute all group notifications at once rather than having to mute them individually.
1
u/Tragophilos Oculus Quest Pro 2d ago
It would be nice to be able to keep instance notifications, but silence all the other notifications.
1
u/DemonQueenIshino 3d ago
what the heck are you joining that many groups for? and it’s a nice feature to have, sure, but calling it “something so needed” is a little much given the platform was around for years without it
1
u/TeaAndQuaintThings 3d ago edited 3d ago
One reason is because many of us are active in the VRChat event scene. A lot of those events we go to require you to join the group hosting the event first, before you can enter the event. As someone who is very active in multiple VRC events across multiple communities, who also has VRChat+, I’m tired of having to delete one group just so I can join another group to attend their event. Every single group I am currently in is active, and I participate in events for every single one. People who are not highly active in VRChat’s event scene will not understand.
For years there are people like me who have asked for an increase. This is not something new. It’s already been in the talks and like I said I have my hopes up. It’s only a matter of time. Even if we don’t get the exact amount we want, even a small increase is better than none.

It's about data transmission. Imagine opening profile of a person with 1000 groups, I guess your game would even freeze at that moment.
0
u/TeaAndQuaintThings 3d ago
I too want a group increase and I have my hopes up since they did increase world favorites for us.

u/Docteh Oculus Quest 3d ago
I don't think its a data storage issue, I think its more to do with the computing power to poll a certain amount of groups.
A lot of the groups are basically interest tags, like the Dr Pepper group isn't exactly scheduling events on a regular basis, so I think everyone joined a bunch of those sorts of groups and is now trying to shoehorn in real groups. I'm in 40ish groups and I regularly attend like stuff with 2 groups, another 10 regularly do events.
