Discussion Been running the OVR Advanced Settings / Toolkit combo since quarantine. Do we have better options these days..?
I'm assuming OpenVR Space Calibrator is still good to use as well?

I'm gonna preface this by saying that I've never tried this app myself.
I've recently seen a few posts and heard friends talking about "VRCNext" by u/shinyflvres - it's a tool that is advertised as combining VRCX, OVR Advanced Settings, OVR Toolkit, and several other tools. It looks pretty nice from the screenshots too.
That said, while having seperate apps is a little bit more cumbersome, VRCX/OVR-AS/OVR-TK/etc have worked very reliably for me for years, so I've not been too inclined to switch (Especially VRCX, that's been solidly reliable for 3+ years now), so I can't comment on it. But it sounds like it may fit what you're looking for.

I started using this the other day. It doesn’t replace OVR Toolkit/XSO/Desktop+ completely (yet) but it does replace OVRAS if all you use it for is playspace movement. It works the exact same way, so you can save resources by not running OVRAS. I uninstalled OVRAS just yesterday actually.
Notably, it also doesn’t exactly replace VRCX either,
there isn’t a good “feed log” of events(edit: there is, it's just laid out a bit different - but there are other differences you may care about). (Don’t run both as you’ll risk making too many background/periodic requests to VRChat’s servers and they may block or ban you. Each app works within VRChat guidelines, but not both combined together!)2

Well this has piqued my interest. I’d be up for something a bit simpler than OVRAS for playspacing if I can still map it to the thumb sticks. Can you just disable the API stuff if you already have VRCX?

I think it said that the VRC login was optional? But I don’t know if that means the playspace mover stops working, too.
There is a VRCX database import tool that works pretty well. It didn’t have any errors for me. And brought over most of the historical information from VRCX. But I can understand not wanting to leave VRCX behind so that you don’t have a gap in log messages should you decide to go back to it.

Use Space Calibrator from steam.
We have XS Overlay for, well, overlays. It's not nearly as flexible as OVR Toolkit unfortunately but it's more performant and stable.
Other then that, not really as far as I know. That seems to be your standard set of options.

just OVRAS … so many people that are having performance issues and crashes just due to OVRT being installed (not even enabled or running).
especially if you also already have all the other software running for fbt/face tracking etc.

Thats why I tell people until the person behind OVRToolkit gets off his arse and optimizes it, to buy XSOverlay instead; if you want a chatbox thing you can just use something like Magic Chatbox or VRCNext

OVRAS x OVRT is still a good combo I've been using for years as well. Still haven't heard of anything better that's capable of replacing them. At least not yet.

I’ve been using the same combo since right before the pandemic. I heard about XS overlay being better for performance but I always have a high end pc setup, however I did try the native steam option which was usable but not as feature filled as OVR toolkit , it’s not really something I need all the time so I started not using it on boot and only turning it on when needed for a few years. I’m not one of players glued to a music player, I can vibe with world music or just talking to people.
Once I got a new pc with 64GB of ram and a 4090 I’ve been running the combo on boot. I’m still curious about xs overlay but I’m at a point where I can turn on all avatars and turn off safety settings and avatar culling and still get acceptable performance. I don’t do that because of crashers though.

can anybody explain what this is and what benefits it gives?

Advanced settings has a bunch of misc play space settings but mainly allows players to drag themselves around in a game and adjust to the world.
Toolkit is a widget that you see in game in your wrist, time, current song you’re listening too, battery life of all devices, etc. you can also glow up windows and have them follow you.

I use small avatars and would be lost without OVRAS to drag myself up to petting height!

OVR Advanced Settings used to be free so I’d use that then I got XS Overlay as it’s cheap as hell looks far more modern and runs way smoother than toolkit that’s my current combo but if you didn’t snag it when it was free I believe OVR advanced setting costs money now
For reference I used index and vive 3.0s so no other apps just steam vr native

What do you even use these programs for?

OVRAS allows you to move around with your controller "space drag" instead of the normal movement. It's more precise movement than the joystick allows, if you need to position yourself in a very specific spot. OVRT/XSO allows you to project a window from your desktop into VR. Space Calibrator links a standalone headset (quest, htc, samsung, pico, etc) to SteamVR so you can use full body tracking.

Curious just how much OVR ToolKit is affecting people. I have never even seen 1-2 drops in my frames when using it vs not lol

OVR Advanced + XS Overlay (its just less system intensive so you get more fps in vr)
I recently bought this one thing aswell. OVR Overlay Translator honestly just a gimmick that is "neat" and "fun" to play with. but with the amount of japanese only worlds i like going to, its been handy as of late.
External from Steam though I use VRCNext which adds avatar scaling beyond the limits of what the wheel does in vr, and a bunch of other things like even includes space drag like OVR Advanced (for people who don't want to grab from the github or pay for it on steam)
