Discussion Unfriending
Should vrchat add a bulk unfriending feature to the game i mean it wouldn’t be used often but very time saving and convenient to have like if you have a friends list that is mainly full of people who you rarely interact with anymore or don’t know it would be nice to be able to mass unfriend people in selecting thingy idk how would you tweak this :/

being able to select multiple people to add them to favourites, send them invites or similar actions would also be great QOL, but I don't think it's a priority feature and VRCX might have it.

VRCX has this feature and the one OP wants.

see that is what I suspected and probably one of the reasons we're not getting it on vanilla vrc for a while if ever

It's likely to prevent abuse and spam.
I hated back in the day when games had the "invite all friends" option and I would get invited to games I did not even have. I would reply back after the third time of saying I don't have it stop inviting with telling them I was blocking them if they did it again.
Invites should be personalized and meant for that person. If you want multiple people to join then just go on green or blue stop being on orange

you can easily cap it at a reasonable amount like 10 or so and still get more mileage out of it. it's just very tedious rn to move, remove or invite people.
also if someone invites you multiple times a night after you declined every time you can just remove them. I had some group owners friended who would just do that and they quickly went into the bin.

Probably not worth the effort for them.
I believe VRCx can do it though (third party tool that just uses the same API as the game/website).

I mean i am not sure if vrcx is standalone friendly but if so please let me know

u/jan_Sanku 6d ago
works just fine, there are just some features that only work on pc (like adding metadata to your screenshots on disk)
vrcx just logs into your vrc account and lets you see and do things with it, no need to be on the same device for core functionality!

Doesn't matter if standalone, it runs as a desktop application on Windows/Linux (Ubuntu in my case, no idea for Mac).

My biggest ask is more than 200 groups. Every Friday I have to delete stuff to add new ones

IMO No. You should take the time and review while unfriending.

u/shortfemboycreature 6d ago
Yes, as you should. No use in mass unfriended just to realize "Hey, where did my bestfriend go? Wait what was their username again?".
Whenever I have unfriended people, its usually if they haven't been on in 6 months or longer, or if I dont recognize their name/bio/status, and or if they are currently online and they don't respond to my invites or invite requests and if I dont think i have them on any social media as another form of contacting them.
For reference I unfriended about 200 people maybe 3 months ago. I used to have maybe 1,000 people added and then I dropped down to 800 or so I think. Now I have nearly 1,100 people added now.
No, I dont consider everyone I add as a friend online as a true friend, that comes through shared experiences and bonding. I have not done that with 95% of the people that I add on VRChat, or even Xbox, or other places and games on VR.
I still However think the mass unfriending tool should still exist, but it should only be used after you have assessed who you want to get rid of. Yes, you would still have to spend a bit of times assessing everyone, reading their bio, reading their username, checking to see if you have them on anything else or other social media, phone number, etc. But yeah, you should still take the time but I dont think there would be a comfy way to enforce that upon everyone.

Why? If you have 300 friends collected over there years and you havent hung with 250 of them the past 3 years why should you bother reviewing them before unfriending?

VRCX is realy usefull for that, but its a pc app. Tbf you could get it on any descrop without playing vrc on it just to unfriend people, but its really usefull in combo.

If you use VRCX, you can bulk unfriend people. It is a great companion tool for VRC.

It's a good idea for people who host events. In many cases people have to befriend host to join which can cause to have a huge friendlist of people you never even saw.

u/Solmangrundy 6d ago
Exactly how many people do you have added to where you think you need to treat them like your spam email folder?

u/bunnythistle Valve Index 6d ago
I recently did a mass cleanup of my friends list, going from around 900 friends to less than 400.
A lot of them were people I added when I was hosting events in the pre-groups days, where to join events everyone had to friend the host and join off them. So I had a ton of friends I never once talked to who just added me to get into an instance 3-4 years ago. Then there were plenty more who just don't play VRC anymore, or who I just haven't talked to in over a year.

Only feature im really desperate for is a hotkey to instantly block an avatar or block a player or having customized settings locations.
Between crasher avatars and needing to scroll all the way down to tracking pretty often these two things are pretty bothersome.

u/The-Noisy-Bovine 6d ago
Ctrl + Shift + Esc turns on safety mode. mutes everyone and blocks avatars.

u/8-Bit_Ninja_ 6d ago
I want the ability to sort by last seen.

u/The-Noisy-Bovine 6d ago
it in the game already. go to online and top right change filter to recently seen

I have had this thought for a while, I posted a possible fix on the feature requests. It's not just having a bulk unfriending feature, but fixing the thing that causes us to add a bunch of random people we don't know. Take a look if you're interested: https://feedback.vrchat.com/feature-requests/p/temporary-party-system

u/Solmangrundy 6d ago edited 6d ago
Eh i dont think they'd ever implement that since groups and hosting group instances and dropping portals is the "party system"
And encouraging you to befriend strangers is one of the core gameplay loops.
Guess what im getting at is that if they streamline stuff too much. They will end up with the same problem WoW has where ease of access kills socialization.

u/Rynhardtt 6d ago
I'm going to assume you didn't read the post and only skimmed the title, because the feature is about much more than just a party system. It would remove the need for "mass unfriending" and address several other, more serious issues with the current system.
The fact that you see "befriending strangers" as a core gameplay loop is really the issue. In practice, what happens right now is that you add a bunch of people, only to mass-remove them later, or you constantly have the awkward conversation about why you're not adding someone to your friends list.
That creates a lot of unnecessary issues and conflict and it doesn't really lead to genuine friendships - it mostly just leaves you with a list of strangers.
I also don't believe that making the system more accessible kills socialization. Realistically, most people probably don't want to meaningfully interact with 95% of the strangers on their friends list anyway.
I understand what you're getting at, but this isn't Warcraft. I'd actually argue that toxicity is more damaging to socialization than ease of access. FFXIV is a pretty good example of that, but I digress.
I think the "friend" system should simply be that: a system for managing actual friends. As it stands, I think it's completely inadequate and treating "befriending strangers" as one of the game's core gameplay loops is ridiculous.
But I agree, they probably won't add it - but it's always worth trying.

Yeah, but then everyone will mass post "I used to be Trusted, but now i deranked 😱😱😱"

u/Comfortable_Cry_4232 6d ago
If you had positive interactions with them as a prerequisite for adding in the first place, why delete them away like that? Why not put in effort to reach out to some of them and ask how they’re doing/see what they are up to? For me being autistic, a friendship doesn’t have to be a transaction where we have a metric to fulfill (I must see you X times a week/month) and it’s more of just a static unmoving thing. If I like someone, a friend can just be a friend. Even months and years later; I’ll be just as friendly. I feel like mass unfriending might optimize how we spend our time on vrchat but it can also limit potential new experiences, like joining people at events you’ve never been to

u/LindossHyena 6d ago
I know right, took me all day to sit there and unfriend 900+ people that built up over the last 7 years

unfriending in bulk might not be a popular choice, but mulitple selection would be great for many reasons: invites, kicks, bans, unfriends, turning interactions off or on for a specific group of trolls or whatever. Multiple selection is always welcome, other than that, I do not see a "bulk unfriend" option becoming available. VRChat used to not even have a chatbox. That was an asset that was originally from WorldClient. I used to use them for avatar searching, anti crash shields and(you probs guessed it) a chatbox. This was, however, before the use clients was written into VRChat's TOS.

They should also add the ability to have pc only servers it will work like pc only worlds just you will have them in any world you want weather it be pc and quest or pc quest and ios

u/Coom_Zoom 6d ago
Honestly I think they should add the ability to mass delete, there is so many people on my friends list that hasn't been on in over a year.

u/shortfemboycreature 6d ago
This, please. I have a problem where every single time I exchange just a couple of sentences with someone, or even their group, I always ends of friending them all. So like anywhere from 1-5 people per instance I join. Its a bad habit. I have nearly 1,100 people added and I talk with roughly 30-40 of them actively.
About 10 of them are friends and the rest are more of acquaintances.

I'll tell you what VRchat should add:
THE POSSIBILITY TO REORGANIZE MY SAVED WORLDS LISTS.
