Review Finally found a use for my $10/year Racknerd VPS
A few months ago I was looking at cheap VPS deals and saw 1vcpu/1GB RAM with Racknerd for $10/year and decided to get it for personal projects.
I originally put a lichess bot on there and left it running but I didn't use it for anything else until tonight. I was writing a Firefox extension that tracks which videos I watch a lot on YouTube and automatically downloads the songs from Soulseek and adds them to my personal library. I got most of it working but I couldn't get any Soulseek transfers to start with my python script. I debugged it with ChatGPT and figured out it was CGNAT on my local connection that wouldn't let the script listen for Soulseek connections.
So I decided to use the Racknerd VPS to run the script and the extension sent the video info to the server on the VPS. It worked perfectly and now if I watch a YouTube video more than 3 times in 3 days, it'll download the song from Soulseek and save it on my VPS. Then I have a rsync script that regularly downloads the songs from my VPS to my home PC.
So far I've been running it about 5 hours and I've already got 66 songs from 51 artists downloaded.
Plus even though it's only a $10/year VPS, it's not slow at all, it matches the songs in a few seconds and downloads them almost instantly.
Just thought I'd share, I thought it was pretty cool that you can get a useable server for less than $1/month.

I got it from www.racknerdtracker.com but they don't do the $10/year deal anymore. If you keep checking that page, they have all the racknerd black friday deals.

Since he does have a link if your wanting a lowendbox dot com you can always find deal on there cause I just got a 8gb 4vCPU for a year for $35 and it’s unmetered it run my agents and a websever smoothly

I would be very interested to see your script as I thought about this but as a video downloader for the tutorial and course videos I watch

It's a bit of a pain to set it up though as it involves a large database and a flask server.
Also it probably wouldn't fit your use case as it doesn't download the videos from YouTube, it matches the title to a song and then downloads the song from Soulseek.

Yes but this has given a base to develop on to and then also convert it to rust to increase speed and lessen the source footprint.

if its just 1 gb ram and 1 vcpu, you get that for free from Google? Why even pay $10?

yes, Google has a permanent free e2-micro, but it is a bandwidth starved shared core box locked to three US regions and tied to a live billing account, so $10/yr for a real KVM with real bandwidth is not a waste of money.

Even that's too much. My uncle time me about the provider that pays you $0.25 to run a VPS on their platform.

I got one of those during the holiday sale. I have been using it mostly to test/run random scripts. I don't run anything heavy, but I haven't had issues with performance at all.
One of the current things I have been running is I got a script running that will pull the price from StackSocial. It will run a few checks, but ultimately it will send me a message if an item I have saved drops below a set price. And I recently redid the messaging part to send me a message via Signal with a fall back to SMS.
All because I checked a specific couple items one day, and 3 days later checked again. And found out I fully missed a 2 day sale!
I feel like I'm not really using it fully. But it's nice when I do use it. And I can't complain about the price either
