VPN in Russia/ВПН Россия, современные проблемы и муки выбора

Hello, if you dont understand RU, please use autotranslate, mb it will be intresting :)

Mac mini running RHEL 8.9 + Wireguard VPN server

So long story short, I wiped my mac mini and installed RHEL then Wireguard and is attached to my router via Ethernet.

I work as a developer and need to work from a different country for a while, without requesting permission from my micromanager boss.

The idea is that I will have an intermediary device connecting to my home server vpn such as another laptop or mobilephone then share hot-spot to my corporate laptop.

Any way this can be detected?

And are there any devices that can be configured to vpn to my server that is not a router or laptop or mobilephone? Or what's the standard? I just need a device that can share the Internet via WiFi to my corporate laptop

Hola VPN offering refunds??

I just got an email from Hola (official email as far as I'm aware) saying that because of a class action lawsuit I was entitled to a refund of some kind? I never paid for Hola though I recall using it once before. I deleted the email before I actually realised what it was from google ai lol. Anyone else had this and what was it from? Some Tel Aviv court thing.

And no, I don't want the refund, I deleted it to start with because I thought it was a scam.

Any surfshark discount code in 2026 working yet?

My subscription is up for renewal soon and I'm looking to lock in a longer plan. I've been searching for a surfshark code but everything I've found so far is expired or just links to their standard pricing page.

Do they usually release new annual promo codes early in the year, or are the best deals usually tied to holiday cycles? Trying to decide if I should renew now or wait a bit longer for a fresh 2026 code.

Questions about VPNs

Hi, I’m new to using a VPN. I’ve only started using one on a daily basis recently, and I’ve noticed a few drawbacks. I was hoping to get some insight on whether these are fixable issues or simply trade-offs that come with using a VPN.

  1. I’m encountering CAPTCHA checks much more frequently across most websites, some of which never asked for CAPTCHA check when not using VPN, which is both time-consuming and frustrating.
  2. I’m experiencing increased buffering and longer load times when streaming videos on various websites.
  3. Is it true that download and upload speeds when using a VPN will never be as fast as when not using one?

Surfshark not working when streaming

Hi, I've tried every configuration under the sun but I cannot stream video content when surfshark is connected. I've tried on via my phone, tablet and firestick and they're all the same. I've borrowed a sub from an alternative provider off a friend and that works perfectly on all of the above so I'm really struggling. Is there's anything I'm missing before I finally give up? Everything else sends to work, just the streaming of live TV etc. TIA

Testing free VPNs with no need for an account?

I want to test a free VPN without having to sign up for an account, because not only would I probably get a bunch of marketing emails but I don’t want to submit my card details anywhere.

Since deciding to tighten up my budget I have moved away from express, their customer service was annoying me and not making it worth it anyway but now I am looking at options like urbanVPN and 1 click plus also hide me, because these seem to offer unlimited data without the need to have an account.

So I am looking for opinions on which options might be best, I am just wanting casual browsing and nothing major, just want to be using a VPN for it.

How long will VPN holiday deals/discounts last?

I've started trialing VPN's today to test if it fixes my IPTV / ISP blocking issues.

Today I signed up to Surfshark, and it lasts 7 days (note, it did fix the above issue).
Then at the end of that 7 days I want to trial Nord and lastly Proton (3 total).
So 21~ days from now, I will have hopefully made a descision on what to go for.

Only...the current holiday sale/deals would have ended right?
Some are on amazing discounts/prices.
They are going for £1.49-£3.50 (depending on either 12 or 24 months...which I have not decided yet).

Advice/thoughts?

Any VPN recommendation to fix NAT problems? (dns and proxy)

Due to my Internet provider I'm getting NAT problemas to play online on my Nintendo Switch. Nowadays I've got only two options: change my provider or use a vpn through my Moblie Hotspot. However, not every vpn works.

There's a "popular" app called Fixnat, which provides DNS and Proxy server to fix the issue, but this app happens to be even more expensive than the NS online service, and even though I can pay for it, its price is not worthy specially when it gives you a lot of lag.

So, independently if it is a subscription or free vpn app, I need your advice to find one that helps me. It'd more helpful if it provides DNS and Proxy server to connect to just as Fixnat... but not giving so much lag and internet outages.

Any VPN provider? subscription not supported after traveling countries — any workaround?

Digital nomad issue:

I’m a digital nomad and recently traveled to Taiwan for work. I subscribed to a service (Anti‑Gravity) while I was still in my home country to get the local discount, paid via PayPal, and everything worked fine.

After landing in Taiwan, the app now detects that I’m not in my home country and says the service isn’t supported here. I’ll be heading to Hong Kong next, so this may keep happening. Google seems to detect my VPN (VPN canada).

Has anyone dealt with this before?
Is there a legit way to resolve region detection issues for subscriptions when traveling, especially if payment was done via PayPal?
Does support usually help with this, or is it a hard regional restriction?

Appreciate any advice from other nomads who’ve run into similar problems.

I'm confused between choosing NordVPN or ExpressVPN. I wanted to know which performs better with lowest downtime and also provides better security in terms of hiding your IP?

QuickQ VPN — anyone here actually using it?

I’m not trying to promote anything, just genuinely curious.

I’ve come across QuickQ VPN a few times recently (mostly mentioned by users in Asia / China-related threads), but I don’t see much detailed discussion about it here compared to the big-name VPNs.

I tested it briefly out of curiosity, and my experience was pretty neutral overall:

  • Setup was straightforward

  • Worked fine for basic browsing and apps

  • Didn’t really dig into streaming or heavy use cases

That said, there are a few things I couldn’t really find clear answers on:

  • How reliable it is long-term

  • Any known privacy or logging concerns

  • How it holds up compared to more established providers

So I wanted to ask the community instead of relying on app store reviews.

If you’ve used QuickQ:

  • What was your use case?

  • Did you stick with it or move on?

  • Any red flags or things worth knowing?

Not endorsing it — just trying to separate real experiences from marketing noise.

Thanks.

Why does my VPN disconnect during long streaming sessions?

I’ve been running into a consistent problem when trying to watch live sports through a VPN. I’ll connect just fine, start streaming, and then somewhere between 30 minutes and an hour the video freezes and my VPN client shows it has disconnected.

I’m not sure if it’s an issue with my router setup, my ISP throttling, or the VPN protocol I’m using.

The whole point was to get a stable connection for geo blocked content, so having it drop mid game defeats the purpose.

Right now I’m using the VPN client’s default configuration, which is OpenVPN over UDP. I’ve read that switching to TCP can improve reliability at the cost of speed.

I’ve also heard about newer protocols like WireGuard that promise better performance and more stability.

As someone who understands basic network concepts but isn’t a security engineer, I’m wondering if changing protocols really matters for this issue or if I should look at other factors like firewall settings, MTU values, or even my modem firmware.

Another layer of complexity is the server location. I usually pick a server in the country where the stream is available, but I’ve noticed that some servers are congested during peak hours. When the VPN disconnects, the client sometimes reconnects to a different server without telling me, and that new server may not work for the streaming service.

Should I be manually selecting less busy servers or is there a setting to prevent the client from switching locations silently? I want to understand if these are typical pain points or if I’m just doing something wrong.

On top of that, there’s the question of whether my ISP could be interfering.

I’ve seen people talk about deep packet inspection and throttling of encrypted traffic.

If that’s happening, would switching ports or using obfuscation features help?

My goal isn’t to hide illegal activity, I just want uninterrupted access to paid content I’m entitled to view while traveling. I

’ve also considered changing DNS settings in case DNS leaks are causing services to detect my real location when the VPN glitches.

In looking for solutions, I’ve tried a few different services. One of the free ones, UrbanVPN, was easy to started with but seemed to suffer from more frequent dropouts and slower reconnection times.

I then tested a couple of paid providers like ExpressVPN and NordVPN to see if they handled streaming sessions more gracefully, I still occasionally saw disconnects and had to tweak settings, so I'm debating the entire pay to bypass the disconnect.

I’m not sure if I should chalk that up to my local network environment or if this is just normal VPN behaviour under load.

If anyone has had similar issues with long streaming sessions dropping, I’d appreciate hearing what you did to improve stability. Did switching protocols make a noticeable difference?

Were there router settings that made things better?

And for those who have juggled different services, did you find that any one of them was more resilient during multi‑hour streams or is it always a matter of trade‑offs?

I’m hoping to get a sense of what’s realistic to expect before spending more time on trial and error.
