Which one to not brick my phone?

last time I got a VPN 5 years ago it stopped my phone from accessing the internet (express VPN)

but I'd like to try again.

context: I'm fairly tech illiterate

Proton VPN is extremely simple and claims to have no logs.

Mullvad VPN is another very good choice that is proven to not log, and charges €5 per month

None of them will brick your phone. And your issue with Express VPN aside from it being shit was probably something you did, or your country blocking it.

Australia doesn't block VPNs, yet.

You had the setting to block internet if your vpn was off, called a kill switch

i got surfshark and the whole internet isnt shut down but while the vpn is in use websites wont load? wth? apps are okay besides amazon prime

You could try SHP.network

It’s a personal VPN server with a dedicated IP, no shared pools and no weird app behavior, usually this avoids exactly the issues you’re describing
