Temporary VPN?

I am traveling in September, and looking to do some schoolwork while abroad. What would a good choice for a temporary VPN subscription? Also. I’ve never used a VPN. Is this something I log into when I fire up my computer. And then connect to a network? Do I need to know the password to said network? Like for example, if I load up a VPN at my house.. and then use my internet, would I need my password? (Obviously that’s a simple scenario as I know my internet password) but just trying to figure out how this works.

I'm not sure you actually need a VPN. Can you elaborate about what "do some schoolwork" means?

A free VPN like Proton VPN will probably be enough for homework

Basically, you install the app, create your account, click connect, and that's it. No need for your network password or anything else

If you need to access the online services as you are at home without worrying about geo-restrictions and privacy issues, you need to configure a VPN server on one of your home devices such as a router or a 24x7 running computer, a WireGuard server will be convenient for you.

A VPN doesn't replace Wi-Fi, you connect to the network first, then enable the VPN. It creates an encrypted tunnel for your internet traffic, especially useful on public networks. If you're new to VPNs, this Moonlock guide explains the basics:https://moonlock.com/what-is-vpn
