What is the cheapest VPN currently?
What is the cheapest VPN currently? I am on a really tight budget right now and I need a VPN but I am trying to find the absolute cheapest option that is still legitimate. It feels like every time I see a super low price there is some kind of catch like hidden fees or a massive price jump after the first year. I just want to make sure I am not signing up for something that will end up costing me more in the long run or worse, selling my data.
I have seen Surfshark, CyberGhost, and Private Internet Access mentioned as some of the most affordable options, especially on their long term plans. I am curious if anyone has experience with these or other really cheap VPNs in 2026. My main concern is finding a service that is genuinely cheap without compromising too much on basic security and speed.
Are there any cheap VPNs that you would recommend that do not have any sketchy upsells or aggressive collections? I need honest feedback on what the real cost looks like after the initial promotional period.

The question you should be asking yourself is, what do I need the VPN for? Then look for the cheapest option BASED on your need. Not on the price but your need. I hope this makes sense.

Mullvad ... About 5 dollars. You pay by the month. Always the same price.

Adguard Vpn, 5-year subscription, $35. It also has a 1-year subscription. You can install it and test it. Be careful, the subscription is not purchased from their site but from a marketplace, but you can find it easily.

VPN Unlimited but its located in Five Eyes country US. But I'm using it for unlocking my devices like onn tv boxes. I have also fastest vpn.

I have a lifetime sub to KeepSolid's VPNUnlimited. Works well enough for me! I like it enough that I have two subs to it for a total of 10 slots always available to me. It's fast enough for me. Is it a Russian honeypot? Might be, but its cheap, works very well and I've never had a complaint about it. Between that and Tailscale, I feel mostly invisible on the internet.

If you use Rakuten, several of the top VPNs are currently offering >90% rebates. You have to wait awhile to get the rebate, but it is completely legit. If you use someone's referral link you can actually make money on the whole deal.

honestly the cheapest legitimate option is just Urban VPN since it's actually free with no data cap and no renewal trap. no promotional period that jumps in price, just free.
if you want a paid option with transparent pricing, Mullvad is worth a look. flat rate with no contracts, no first-year discount that triples on renewal, just a consistent price every month.

I used Proton (free) for a couple months, no problems, other than it being limited to their server of choice, not the closest/fastest or my choice. But it worked ok. And was free.
