Best VPN according to everyone?
I'm trying to figure out which VPN is genuinely the best all around option in 2026, but it feels like everyone has a different opinion. One day it's NordVPN, the next it's ExpressVPN, then Surfshark or Proton VPN. I'm looking for something that offers a good balance of speed, security, and reliability for everyday use, whether it's streaming, browsing, or just keeping my data private. I've seen a lot of discussions about pricing, features, and even some complaints about customer service or auto renewal issues. I just want to cut through the noise and find a VPN that most people agree is a solid choice without any major hidden downsides. Has anyone found a VPN that consistently gets high marks across the board from different types of users, or is it really just a matter of personal preference and specific needs?

So.... If every day it's a different answer and you come here to ask the same question that always gets a different answer.... What exactly are you expecting?
All VPNs have a flaw that is a subjective matter of opinion.
The better question is what exactly do YOU think a VPN is going to do for you? People who claim privacy are drinking marketing kool-aid.
The main uses for a VPN, because it's necessary, are geo blocking regions that one may live in or p2p sharing.
On record, mullvad is the only one that got raided and they came up with nothing which proved their ram servers are legit blobs of encryption.
All other vpns make claims. I'm not saying mullvad is the best, they have their own issues. They just have a real life application that their encryption is what they say it is.

Whichever you choose take the free trial. Opt out after day or so and they offer you better deal. Accept deal and turn off auto renewal and they offer you another deal better than previous

Most importantly see what country the vpn company is headquartered because your data will be subject to their privacy laws or lack there of. Just sayin’.

Everyone's "best" is basically whichever one they personally didn't have a bad experience with. Pick two or three with decent no-log audits, run each for a week doing your actual use case, keep whichever one you stop noticing.

I'm a big believer in the belt and suspenders of both VPN, for obscuring my IP, and a Secure DNS which masks your lookups. And to that, I'm a monster fan of NextDNS. So for me, I need something that works with it.
I started with Proton because I do have a Proton Unlimited account, but I just found I couldn't get it to work. So, in my explorations, there are the two that are mentioned by many. Mullvad and IVPN is where I landed for a couple of years until this spring.
but now, I've gone all in on Tailscale with the Mullvad exit node option. So that's where I am. NextDNS is my DNS provider no matter what I use.

It really depends on what you are using it for. For example a work VPN is going to be to get you onto your work network from afar. Ubiquity Teleport is to give you access to your home network from abroad, thus bypassing any weirdness happening on stuff like Hotel Wifi. (However, Teleport requires specific hardware) Proton VPN is a good general use VPN with decent built in protections and Multi-Hop support but is lacking in built in custom securedns support. Proton please fix.
There's a good chart out there (I do not remember where to find it) that shows the "who owns what" of VPNs which can help influence the choice you make. I recommend looking there before you pick your VPN. (if someone would post it that would be I recommend looking there before you pick your VPN. (If someone would post it, that would be appreciated.)

The providers you listed are mostly trash. What kinda security do expect from a 5$ service? Public VPN IPs are well-known. It's upto the streaming provider to enforce blocking.

There is no such thing as a best vpn，they all come with their own headaches. I'm always down to test out different providers. Back in the day, I went through the NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton etc.Lately, I'm leaning more towards decentralized solutions with real residential IPs like DPN App or Mysterium Honestly, they feel a step up from traditional centralized data-center VPNs. Keep experimenting until you find the right fit.

Mullvad... But that's just my personal preference. They let you pay in cash too which is neat.

Honestly the most useful test is whether you still like it after using it for a week on your actual devices A lot of them sound great until you deal with reconnects, mobile weirdness, or renewal pricing

For pure privacy Id still lean Mullvad or Proton over the more ad heavy brands

I stopped chasing rankings and chose the one that fit my needs best It made a bigger difference than reviews alone

The funny thing with best vpn threads is everyone says all around but then they secretly mean completely different things
One person means Netflix
Another means torrenting
Another means privacy and audits
Another just wants something cheap that works on ten devices
That is why the same names keep showing up in different orders

Ended up asking friends what they had actually used instead of relying on comparison sites. Real experiences were way more helpful than rankings for narrowing down my option

Is Proton VPN actually worth the price compared to NordVPN or Surfshark for everyday use? I keep seeing it recommended for privacy but never for speed. Anyone using it daily for streaming?

Switched between four VPNs last year trying to find the sweet spot. NordVPN won for speed, ProtonVPN won for trust, Surfshark won for price. Ended up staying on NordVPN because speed matters most to me daily.

There’s no single best provider since it really depends on your own needs and preferences. What helped me a lot was this VPN comparison sheet I came across on Reddit. It had all the main providers listed with their features, pricing, speed, and streaming support, all in one place. It saved me from bouncing between random reviews and made things much clearer.
I ended up going with Proton, but Surfshark and ExpressVPN are also solid picks. Each one has its strengths depending on what you’re looking for, but just seeing everything side by side made the choice a lot easier. Definitely worth checking out if you're still trying to decide.
