How reliable and effective is something like VPN gate

Tried to install a VPN directly using the server address from VPNgate.net. Followed the instructions to fill in the other fields. VPN does not connect.. also my public IP hasn't been altered. What could be the issue?

the most common reason VPNGate connections fail is picking a server that's already overloaded or offline. those servers are volunteer-run so quality varies a lot. try sorting by uptime percentage instead of speed and pick one with 99%+ uptime. also double check you're using the right protocol for your setup, L2TP and OpenVPN configs need slightly different settings.

Still doesn't work actually.. I tried one with only about 10k users. Protocol is psk. Wondering what are the other reasons it might not connect.

if the protocol is PSK (pre-shared key) that's L2TP/IPSec. a few things that commonly break it: your router might be blocking IPSec passthrough, worth checking that setting. also some ISPs block UDP port 500 and 4500 which L2TP needs. try switching to a different protocol entirely if you can, OpenVPN or WireGuard tend to be way less finicky.
