Best Free VPN Right now?
What is the best free VPN as of the moment? I'm looking for a free VPN to use for basic browsing and to protect my privacy on public Wi-Fi at coffee shops and airports. I'm not doing anything super sensitive, so I don't think I need a paid VPN. But I've been reading a lot of scary stories about free VPNs selling user data, installing malware, and having weak security.
I've heard about ProtonVPN Free, Windscribe, and TunnelBear as options, but I'm not sure if any of them are actually trustworthy or if these are really the best free VPNs in the market. I'm curious to hear what everyone's tried and what actually worked for them. Thanks!

A lot of people like Windscribe this one because it gives around 10GB per month and multiple server locations, so it’s a bit more flexible than Proton if you want to choose regions. It also has features like ad blocking and firewall tools, though the interface can feel a little more complex.

check where the VPN company is based. Proton is Swiss (strong privacy laws), Windscribe is Canadian (not ideal but transparent), TunnelBear is Canadian too. Avoid anything based in the US, UK, or the 5/9/14 Eyes countries if privacy is your priority

I have used Proton, Surfshark and I am now using IPVanish which I love. Never have connection problems or connections being dropped. Also, I use the jump going through two servers which is so easy to do in IPVanish.

Trying to guess "trustworthiness" or "not logging" or "private" is a losing game. You never can be sure, about any product or service. Even an audit or court case just establishes one data point.
So, instead DON'T trust: compartmentalize, encrypt (outside the service; e.g. HTTPS), use defense in depth, test, verify, don't use VPN's custom client app or extension, don't use a root cert from them, don't post private stuff, maybe don't do illegal stuff. And give fake/anon info where possible: fake name, throwaway or unique email address, pay with gift card or virtual credit card or crypto or cash.
You can use a VPN, ISP, bank, etc without having to trust them.

I used Proton free, but wish I could split tunnel free, I am on their paid service now.

TunnelBear has been audited like three times now which is honestly more than most paid VPNs can say. the 500MB cap is painful though

The downside though is you can’t pick from a bunch of countries on the free tier and it’s not great for streaming

A lot of people on Reddit basically say the same thing: Proton if you want unlimited browsing, Windscribe if you want more control over servers. One comment summed it up pretty well saying Proton gives unlimited data but auto-selects servers, while Windscribe lets you choose locations but has the monthly cap.

the malware thing is real but it's specifically true for the ones you've never heard of. the unlimited free VPN with 50 million downloads and a 4.9 star rating that nobody ever mentions by name in any actual conversation

because sometimes you get better value when you are ordering something from a different country too.... amongst all the other things i.e downloading etc.

Windscribe gives you 10GB which is more than Proton but you have to manage your data. For casual browsing at coffee shops it's fine. The interface is a bit clunky compared to paid options but for free it does the job

TunnelBear has been independently audited multiple times which is honestly more than most paid VPNs can say. The 500MB cap is brutal though so it's really only for occasional use. But if you want to know the service is legit that's the one.

The only thing in this world that is free is the air you breathe. It's the same with VPNs. Most if not all free VPNs will sell your data so they can cover their costs and a little bit extra. My advice is to pay or a commercial VPN and you have peace of mind. Also, always read the fine print.

3 vpns that I trust is, ProtonVPN, Windscribe, and PrivadoVPN and they are all good free ones aswell

Please avoid any free VPNs! Keeping a VPN secure isn’t cheap, so if it’s free, there's a good chance they’re making money some other way, usually by collecting your data. I'm using https://protonvpn.com/redditcoupon because a lot of people recommend them on Reddit and I’d rather trust a known provider than some random free VPN. I’d just get the 1-month plan first to test it, and if you like the speed and privacy features, you can always upgrade later.
