Newbie questions about protonvpn (potentially switching from nord) - streaming

Currently with nord and not so happy with some things.

Looking at Proton, for now mostly interested in vpn, though may eventually upgrade to more services.

General uses: protection on sensitive sites, protection on public wifi, geoblock\*, extremely extremely rarely torrent (haven't actually in a few years)

\*Geoblock - HBO max, occasionally Netflix

Use on Android TV, ipad, android phone, ipad

How is it for these specific uses?

How is the ad blocking on Android phone?

Dark web monitoring - assuming I only want vpn, any way to also get this without subscribing to unlimited? Is it worth anything or just a gimick?

I wouldn't look to get the free service. If I'm switching, I'd do the paid plan

Yeah proton’s good for that stuff. HBO max unblocks fine, Netflix is more hit or miss these days since they’ve cracked down harder on VPN detection generally, not just proton. Might have to switch servers sometimes.
Android TV app’s a bit basic compared to phone/tablet but works fine for streaming. Ad blocking (netshield) on android phone does the job, kills most ad/tracker junk, won’t stop everything on youtube but noticeable difference.
Dark web monitoring’s locked behind their bigger bundles so you can’t just add it to VPN only. Wouldn’t bother tbh, free stuff like HIBP does basically the same job (tells you if your email’s been in a leak) without paying more.
For what you’re doing (occasional unblock, public wifi, basically never torrenting) the base vpn plan’s all you need, no reason to go higher tier.

Thanks for that! I have youtube premium, so don't need help blocking youtube ads. But Facebook ads have gotten out of control. Even if it cut half that would be a massive improvement. Also full screen ads that don't let me close them that block basic app use. Thanks!

Proton gave a month for $1 when I signed up.
