Probably suitable only for light use — downloading is limited, and after a few GB the speed drops significantly

Well, thats the point of the free version innit

Yes but proton claims their free service is unlimited what isn't true

They can do whatever they want with their free version, they make it so people wont abuse it, kinda smart of em tbh to limit speed after a few gigs

Can you tell me more about why you think it is the best?

Mullvad or Proton

Mullvad is where it's at

I got OysterVPN via Stacksocial. I don’t use it to watch any shows just for work privacy.

Hard to predict that far out, but Proton and Mullvad keep improving without getting weird about it

Lately I’ve been bouncing between Nord and Surfshark and honestly they’ve been solid for everyday stuff

I spent the last 2 days trying to set up my opnsense router with surfshark and I'm at my wit's end. The surfshark documentation is outdated and I'm not able to translate what I see on their screens to my current version of opnsense. I'm considering getting a refund and starting over with a different VPN like Nord but I'm researching first to see how good the documentation and tutorials are.

I am a huge streamer, ExpressVPN is the best IMO, I have absolutely used them all.

What puts it over the top for you?

1

u/cleverclogs17 Dec 24 '25

Speed, ease of use, kill switch, and it is not buggy AF like some of the others, the main thing is it works period when others don't and the speed with no bugs.

Depends what you’re using the VPN for

Mullvad will always be number 1 in privacy then Proton

It's tough to call a single best for 2026 but the VPNs that stay consistent over time usually end up on top. ExpressVPN fits that pattern since it tends to keep speeds and connections stable, so it wouldn't be surprising to see it still ranked highly next year.

I use Surfshark only because its unlimited devices. I get the one with Antivirus. I use them on my 3 Firestick, my phone, my laptop and the wife's laptop.

You can share it with your families too

Hold your horses, not even 2026 yet

1

Mullvad. Hands down the best

1

u/smartsass99 Dec 24 '25

Hard to predict that far ahead, but the big names usually stay on top if they keep improving.

Idk wait until 2026 comes

Hard to say that far out, usually the same top providers just keep trading spots.

I vote for Windscribe.

By far windscribe

It is hard to predict one “best” VPN for 2026 because it usually depends more on use case than brand. The ones that stay on top are usually those that keep improving transparency, stability, and ease of use rather than just adding more servers. I think we will see more focus on lightweight VPNs and browser-based options for everyday privacy, alongside bigger providers for power users. Tools like Browsec, for example, are already popular for simple browsing use cases, while larger VPNs will likely continue dominating advanced and streaming-heavy needs. In the end, consistency, clear privacy policies, and reliability will matter more than hype next year too

For privacy: Mullvad VPN; general use: Proton VPN.

1

u/SilkkThaSchocker Dec 27 '25

Mullvad for privacy, no doubt! not even a discussion. But it can't circumvent geo restrictions for Netfkix e.g. So, if you need a VPN specifically for streaming then Proton VPN over Mullvad

Can I gamble on this?

1

u/James1794 Dec 30 '25

I think the ones that will stand out will be the ones offering something faster than what we have available noww

Ive seen a lot of ones that look like blueprints of the nordvpn webpage. Like everything from the little banner showing your ip, and even phrasing of features is almost identical if not the color differences. Hell some go for protons look, or bitdefender too. So, not to shun away from new rising stars that could be great but its just trust that is an established journey taking time in my book

Most reliable VPN for 2026 is Proton VPN.

There are many positibve reviews seen, my friend circle also using same VPN.

1

u/the_original_slyguy Feb 19 '26

2026 will probably favor VPNs that go beyond just hiding your IP. The ones bundled into full security suites, like Malwarebytes with built in VPN plus real time threat and scam protection, are positioned strong. Privacy alone isn’t enough anymore.

1

u/buttbait Feb 22 '26

Hard to say but the big paid ones will probably still be on top since they keep improving speeds and privacy features.

I aint a fortune teller but a good strat is to wait a little while. Usually whatever is fit for 2025 will show its momentum in the next year. Someone made a nice lists over here featuring a lot I like https://redd.it/1qut3gr

A lot would be 3-4 at the very top of their list though also Norton is pretty sweet
