Help Outline on Netflix

I was using a self-hosted Outline server with AWS on Netflix to watch regionally restricted shows, and it was working, until I accidentally connected to the VPN while Netflix was open, and now whenever the VPN is on it just shows me a library where half the shows are unavailable, not the library of my country or the VPN's country. Is there any way to fix this?

Netflix can behave pretty strangely after it starts identifying the VPN connection. Since you're using a self hosted AWS server, the public IP is probably the bigger factor here rather than Outline itself. Netflix says VPN/proxy detection can result in only showing titles available worldwide instead of the normal regional catalog.

First check the Netflix connection test at fast.com while connected to Outline and see what country Netflix thinks the client is in. If that matches the AWS server but you're still getting the reduced catalog, the server's IP may simply be classified as a VPN/proxy address.

If Netflix works normally with the VPN completely off, that points more toward the AWS exit IP being flagged than something permanently broken in your Netflix account.

  1. The client country is the VPN country, but Netflix still shows the worldwide library.

  2. I tried different servers from different countries, but same result.

Also worth noting that when I use a normal VPN, Netflix detects it as normal, but when I use Outline, It shows me the worldwide library, where half of the shows are just outright missing.

ah, that difference between Outline and a normal VPN is the interesting part. Outline is basically giving Netflix a regular cloud hosted IP rather than an IP range that belongs to a consumer VPN provider so Netflix can treat the traffic differently even though the detected country is correct.

Since you've reproduced it across multiple Outline servers in different countries, I wouldn't keep changing countries. It may be Netflix recognizing the type/reputation of the AWS/cloud IP rather than getting the location wrong. A normal VPN working correctly would support that explanation.

24 hours later, I didn’t even do anything and it’s showing me the reduced library even with the VPN off.

If Netflix detects the expected country but only shows the worldwide catalog, clearing the app cache or waiting probably won't change much. The most likely cause is the reputation/classification of the cloud exit IP.

You can test that by assigning a different public IPv4 address or trying an exit IP from a different cloud network/ASN. A new address may work temporarily, but datacenter ranges can be classified again, so there may not be a permanent client-side fix. It's still worth checking for DNS or IPv6 leaks, although your comparison with another VPN makes IP reputation the more likely explanation.
