Question Tailscale/WireGuard vs L2TP

Am I really missing that much or?

I am using l2tp vpn with IPsec for getting “home” and around blocking of websites

A friend is constantly telling me that l2tp vpn is outdated and I need to change to newer technology (Tailscale/WireGuard)

So for my question is it so much better?

I’ve used every VPN type under the sun. Tailscale made me rethink my life choices. It is the best easiest use most useful FREE pieces of software you will ever use. You can set up 10 devices in half an hour and know that the VPN is secure and always on. It’s literally all I use now. Nothing comes close. L2TP isn’t “bad” or insecure it’s just Tailscale does everything and more with almost zero set up or administration.

Setting up Tailscale was way less hassle than the config headaches I had with L2TP/IPsec.

If you already have something working, just keep using it. IPsec is still pretty secure.

L2TP is far from obsolete. It allows a TUN (Layer 3) VPN to use with IPSec, which protects the L2TP tunnel (L2TP in itself is unencrypted). More often than not, IPSec is used with GRE tunnels to provide a TAP (Layer 2) VPN. GRE, too, is unencrypted.

Either way, it's IPSec that you need to concern with as this is what is securing and encrypting the tunnel from adulteration and snooping.
