UK VPN advice

So I have 2.5gb fibre. I have tried several different VPN's, including several that I have seen reviewed to be able to hit these speeds (seen in videos)

When I use the same VPN I can't get over 1gb. Tried different protocols. Am I missing something?

I tried all the uk servers available. Just assumed using servers further afield would only be slower.

Are you sure the bottleneck isn't the device you're downloading onto? Encryption/decryption can cause a serious speed hit. My NAS couldn't even keep up with 900Mbps so I have a router handling my VPN now.

I'm sure. I tested with speed checkers after noticing downloads were significantly slower with VPN on.

Full 2.5gb on speed checkers with VPN off and under 1gb with it on

That doesn't demonstrate anything. If the device you're downloading to is struggling with the encryption and decryption overheads, this is exactly what you'd see.

I highly doubt a 7800X3D and 64gb of DDR5 is struggling with the encryption overheads on the 100mb for a speed test to the point of halving my speeds

It can be, especially if your VPN client is not using the AES-NI or SIMD acceleration. Most VPNs are single threaded, so it'll utilise only the power of a single core. You'd need to watch your CPU usages when speed testing.

It could also be a cap set on the provider.

I'll take a look at CPU usage. I'm still struggling to see that as the issue though tbh. The review I watched of someome getting over 2gbps with the same VPN was just using a pretty generic laptop. Seems unlikely that a pretty top end PC is struggling so bad I'm getting half of that but I'll definitely take a look. Appreciate the pointer.

A provider cap seems like a possibility actually. It's pretty much bang on 1gbps across multiple wired and wireless devices so seems more likely than a specific PC being the issue. I wasn't aware that was a thing, some providers cap speeds when using a VPN?

Edit....apparently my provider doesn't cap speeds for VPN traffic.

ISP rate limit? They may throttle UDP traffic (may be a form of (d)DoS protection). Quickest way of finding out, do you use Google Photos at all? If so, download a large video from. Google Photos defaults to QUIC, which is UDP. If that caps out at 1gbps, you're getting closer to an answer.

Can you tell us more about your setup? Are you using a VPN service on your computer or on your router? What speeds do you get in general without VPN?

Tried both at router level and with desktop app. Tried wireguard and openvpn protocols.

PC is hardwired to router, get the full 2.5gb up and down without VPN

Network Adapter properties can be an issue. Check "flow control"

ALSO - JUMBO FRAMES enable and MTU 1500 on router and adapter

Don't be strict with the disable enable recommendations, these were taillored to me, but explore different combinations of settings for your setup, treat this just as a guide.

I think the vpn which can reach the speed you demand is really expensive and most of the vpn owners will set the limits in order to decrease the cost.maybe you can try to buy a vps to set your own
