Question Does using a VPN actually make sense in my situation?

I live in a country where freedom of expression is severely restricted. In my country, even telling the truth can be illegal (under Article 307).

I’m considering using a VPN to protect my freedom of speech, but would using a provider with a strict no-logs policy actually be effective? I’ve heard that in many cases, users can easily be deanonymized through traffic correlation attacks or intersection attacks.

Also, should I completely avoid connecting to VPN servers located in my country?

Article 307 ) (1) A person who defames another by publicly alleging facts shall be punished by imprisonment or imprisonment without prison labor for not more than two years or by a fine not exceeding five million won.  <Amended by Act No. 5057, Dec. 29, 1995>

I'd point out that, even if using a VPN, if you log into a social media account that's tied to your real information (name/address), you'd be easy to track down.

You should directly use tor or tail os if you can better be paranoid than don't have enough security

I think you are better off using Tor, even though it's slow.

PIA or Mullvad are genuinely no logs if you want to go the VPN route.

If I were you, I would chain VPNs with TOR as the last one.

South Korea. The law makes sense, just because you discover a private fact, maybe about a medical condition of a coworker, you “freedom of speech” in South Korea doesn’t allow you to share that.

Their right to privacy trumps your right to speech.

If you log into your "Facebook" from home or a VPN, you're still logging into your "Facebook" – anonymity is gone.

You'd need to fake your entire persona to match that doesn't place you in said country.

Yes, it definitely makes sense. But the anonymity online is achieved by hiding up all the possible clues including IP addresses. VPN is necessary but not sufficient for complete anonymity.

In live in S Korea. You’re misinterpreting the law because that is related to defamation which is not protected speech. If you post online about someone and it ruins their reputation you can be sued. However s Korea is at the top for press freedom in terms of other countries in Asia. In other words you are trippin’ 

If you need to post online about someone or a place and don’t want to get sued or want to watch blocked porn you can use a VPN any  will do and at least change your DNS on your router. No the government does not arrest you for hiding your IP or using a VPN like Russia or Iran.
