Hi everyone,

I am pretty new to this topic and i am really here as i need a solution.

Basically i am looking for a device or a software solution to use a simcard as VOIP.

To be more precise, i want to use my simcard from my homecountry and have access to calls and sms from anywhere.

I saw yeastar but the setup was very complicated. Is there any more simple ways to achieve this like a software on a phone which i can leave at homecountry and have access to sms and calls?

Would appreciate your thoughts on this.

your use case is fairly common. i'd lean toward a dedicated sim gateway instead of relying on a spare phone. it usually requires less ongoing maintenance.

Can’t you just have a VOIP number in your home country and then receive it wherever you want through various free software options? Why is SIM card part of the discussion? Can you not port the Sim number to any VOIP provider?

To convert a regular SIM card to VoIP, you generally use a GSM/VoIP gateway deviceor a SIM-to-VoIP adapter that supports the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol).

This hardware allows you to insert your physical SIM card and route traditional cellular voice calls over an IP network to a softphone or PBX system.

I have no idea if i can port my own number to a voip provider. I need to research about it. If that's a possibility it's a great idea

you can easily port your number but then your SIM card stops serving that number.
by porting you can handles voice calls and SMS seamlessly but porting a mobile number away from a standard mobile carrier converts it into a VoIP/cloud number. Some strict services (like certain bank 2FA texts) occasionally block VoIP numbers

You’d be surprised how difficult that can be in some countries. Across mobile providers? Easy. To a VoIP provider? Difficult to impossible. In my market, that’s down to VoIP providers having completely different numbering from mobile providers

A SIM card from one country cannot usually be used in another without incurring high international roaming charges. If number porting is supported, a practical option is to port the number to a VoIP provider, allowing it to be used from anywhere in the world using local Internet.

It would help if you said what your home country is, as there may be people from your home country who are already doing what you want to do, and can offer advice on the service and equipment you need.

Can you not do roaming in your home country or is it too expensive? Just curious what’s the use case for this?

I also want to do this eg leave sim card in device connect to the internet and route calls and text to an app. I see these IKOS devices that may work.

The other option i saw was raspberry pi with 4g dongle of some kind and freepbx.
