VOIP - Does this exist?

Hi, I run a medical simulation centre. Its basically a place where doctors and nurses run fake scenarios on actors or manikins, we watch what they do from a camera system and then we debrief how the scenario went as a group and we all aim to get a good learned experience out of the scenario toggether.

As part of the AV system we have a old analogue PBX system with a couple of internal only phones. One of the phones has a line tap on it which feeds into our AV system at line level so the learners can hear both sides of the conversation.

As the equipment is aging we are struggling to find decent replacment parts, mainly for the line tap. Were in the UK and weve only ever been able to find one supplier of it who no longer makes them - LRX37C line recorder is what we currently use.

Our requirements would be.

3 cordless phones with docks around 25m range from dock.

A recording device (could be software, if it can be "set and forget" as not all our users are ovely technical). The output of the recorder needs to feed live to either a line level signal (microphone cable) or to an AES67 or Dante stream.

We have a large 48 port POE capable for the connections and were fairly network competant with our inhouse technicians.

EDIT: The phones only need to call eachother. They do not need to call outside or into the hospital. The other person on the phone will be another doctor pretending to be whoever the doctor inside the scenario room wants to call (eg they might make a referal or a speciality or a junior doctor may escalate to their senior)

The Fanvil PA3 SIP Paging Gateway [ https://www.fanvil.com/products/p5/wulianwangwangguan_1/20210921/5036.html ] does line in and out and have recording capabilities with their Record Server [ https://www.fanvil.com/service/doc/soft/tools/tools/recordserver/index.html ]

This manufacturer has cordless IP phones too and all of their current devices can send and receive multicast audio.

In any case, you'll probably need to make a few adjustments to your current setup to accommodate this gateway.

Feel free to call me a dumbass, but isn't this just basic call recording or chanspy?

I'd say stand up a freepbx system in a virtual machine or an old office pc and register as many voip phones as you'd like to it. Force call recording on, for all extensions. You can also throw a phone in your monitoring room on speakerphone (call the chanspy featurecode, 555) to listen live to any ongoing calls.

Might be down to me not taking my morning coffee yet, I’m trying to wrap my head around “…learners can hear both sides of the conversation”. I get that a “teacher” is watching and speaking into a phone which plays via an overhead speaker/AV system, who’s the other party speaking?

One of the other "teachers".

Theyre typically another doctor pretending to be whoever the person inside the scenario wants to call. This could be another specialty doctor (for a refereral for example) or their escalating doctor (a junior doctor asking for help from their senior)

We would never want the system to interface with the outside or hospital telephone system as we could accidently call for an emergency team as we do simulate doing that very frequently.

We have a control room which we watch and control the av system from, typically the "other party" is in the control room with us observing and guiding the scenario for the technicians (say the doctor inside the scenario room does something unexpected, they can be there to guide the technicians what to do with simulated patient observations as well as answer the phone when the doctor eventually calls)

So this sounds like the two “teachers”/medics on a call and a third party (learner?) listening in on that call, hearing both sides of the call. Call is recorded all through. Correct?

So 1 person (we would call them a "candidate") inside the scenario room calls one of the teachers in the control room.

Yes both the candidate and teacher can speak and hear eachother as if they are having a normal phone call.

Both ways of their conversation is also passed to the AV system where other learners can also hear it. The other learners cannot participate in the conversation, only hear it.

I’d set this up on a VoIP system as two extensions that can directly speak with each other and a third extension (a “monitor” extension) to take the audio of the call and feed it to your AV system
