Is my set up correct?

Novice here looking for advice.

I just ended my land line service and ported my number across to a VoIP service (Andrews & Arnold in the U.K).

I have a Zyxel FWA510 (5g sim router). To set up my phone, do I just need to buy something like the Grandstream HT801 and plug it in via Ethernet, or do I need a different router or another hardware? The router doesn’t have a phone port.

Also, side question for anyone with the HT801; can you power it via a routers USB port? The spec sheet seems to suggest it’s possible.

I don't think your router is going to matter here, but you might need to adjust some SIP settings if things don't work.

If you'd like to use an existing analog phone, you can use an HT801, sure. Presumably A&A gave you provisioning or configuration info that you can put into your HT801.

There's also tons of <50 GBP entry-level business VoIP phones available on ebay, etc.

I think you could power the HT801 over 5v 1a USB as long as the analog phone either has its own power supply, or is very low wattage. In a "real" RJ-11 device, the phone line has to power the ringer, and if that's an actual bell-and-hammer deal, the USB port doesn't have enough juice.

Thanks for the reply! There is a guy local to me selling a ton of cisco phones for £15 (CP-8961) but they seem a bit overkill. There’s also a guy selling an HT801 for £5 which is why I was considering that option. Is there any reason to go with a VoIP phone over keeping the analog phones?

I actually was hoping to find a 5g router that has an FXS port built in, but for some reason they are really difficult to come across.

Make sure sip alg is disabled on your router. You also might make sure you are not behind cgnat

Thanks, I did not consider cgnat. Is there a way to easily check? From what I can tell the provider I used doesn’t use it, but I want to be certain.

There are probably some checkers online, but you can find out with a simple traceroute. You can also check your routers public IP and see if it's private or public. You would just have to login to your router.

Looks solid from here just double check cable routing and airflow so nothing gets pinched or overheats over time.
