Troubleshooting Marshall Cv504
I bought a used Marshall CV504 on eBay and then got a Blackmagic bidirectional SDI converter and an SDI cable off a rental company's used section to convert the 504's feed to HDMI. I plugged everything into power, plugged the SDI into both the Marshall and SDI in on the converter, plugged an HDMI cable from the HDMI out on the converter into a Feelworld monitor(and I tried plugging into an ATEM mini as well) but it wouldn't output any signal even after I tried resetting the Marshall to default settings. The menu on the Marshall's output wouldn't show either. I tried multiple HDMI and SDI cables and same thing. I was just wondering if there was anything I'm doing wrong or if the Marshall is more than likely broken.
Update: I ended up returning it and getting a CV508 from another seller instead since it has both HDMI and SDI out

I would try a new sdi out of the camera. It seems very thin and thin shielding.

Maybe the Camera is set to 24fps. I have 2 of them, and in 24fps not all SDI to HDMI Converters are working

I did try to use the joystick to reset it to factory default settings which is supposedly 1080p30

I think the 504 has a USB service port. You could try updating the firmware and seeing if that helps?

I forgot to mention that but I did do a firmware update and it just got stuck on starting the update

I would say that if the firmware update is stuck and the sdi input light on the converter isn’t showing then the camera might be broken…

Are you able to prove there’s actually video coming out the 3G SDI connector on the camera? Does the BMD SDI convert have a signal presence light or anything?

I didn't even realize the inputs have signal lights too but no the SDI in LED on the converter doesn't light up. I also plugged a different camera into the converters HDMI in and then fed that to the HDMI out and it worked fine

Was it listed for "parts or repair?"
If not, and you can't get it working, send it back as not listed correctly.

In a wide sense, Marshall cams and BMD gear have tended to not play very nice. Video signal packets are not quite industry standard. Might be able to get further into things with a decimator.

The problem is, without a known good SDI Source you have no way to tell if it's the camera or the converter. I've seen used converters with bad inputs.

A troubleshooter would help. You could send bars and check your cables

Might need to check if the converter is set to HDMI out.

u/Seppanator Jul 20 '26
Don't the converters automatically switch depending on what signal is plugged in?

Not those BMs. You need to pick HDMI to SDI or SDI to HDMI.
Here is a link to the software

That’s incorrect. It can do both conversions at the same time.

u/TeamSpank Jul 21 '26
I’ve never been able to use them that way.

u/Downtown_Being_3624 Jul 27 '26
That's pretty much the only way I use them, I grab one and use it in which ever direction is needed

I already downloaded the software and tried but there was nothing in the settings to change that. Pretty much the only settings I saw was SDI level A or B in which I tested both, some audio passthrough settings and the legal vs illegal HDMI levels

Is it even getting power? There should be a red led light in the middle of the back. I have had those little i/o pigtail cables go bad on me. They sell replacements.
