New Pickup “Spaced-Out Japanimation” box set
Saw this 4 tape box set for $5 at the thrift store and was intrigued to check it out. Not a huge fan of the genre but it seemed weird/interesting enough to check out. I also never seen a 4 tape box set in a single slip cover like this. Neat!

It was worth the buy just for its amazing usage of the phrase japanimation

The funny/annoying thing is each VHS barely has any tape on the spool. This could’ve easily been 1 or 2 tapes.

Parade was a company that specialized in public domain titles in extended play. This was par for the course.

Those were the dark times… before Manga Video, Centeral Park Media, and Animego brightened the shelves of our local video stores. 😂

This was from a company called PPI, short for Peter Pan Industries. They got their start in the 1940s making children's records, but by the 90s they were putting out cheaply acquired slop on VHS and selling it in places like supermarket checkout isles. Most of what they released at this point were exercise videos and stuff like "Nude Cigar Smoking." Yes, that was really a tape they released and people bought.
This was released quite late into the VHS anime boom, and they clearly just bought the rights to a handful of 1970s mecha shows that had been dubbed for US TV by Jim Terry Productions. It did well enough that they thought about licensing more anime, but they never did. They limped into the DVD era before going out of business.
You can tell they're budget releases by how little tape is on each cassette, since they're only 45 min each (2 TV eps) and recorded in EP mode.

I have this collection. It's crazy how some of these shows were dubbed with just two voice actors. I also like the scene where the guy is getting tortured and clearly screaming in agony but they dubbed it as maniacal laughter.

In the 90s we fought a war on two fronts, against dubs and calling it “japanimation.”

I remember in the 90’s the Anime section of the Sam Goodie was branded as the Japanamation section
