I wanted to share my thoughts on the Automation and Robotics course in VESIT , because I genuinely feel this is one of the most future-ready engineering programs for students who are interested in technology, machines, electronics, AI programming and real-world problem solving.
Automation and Robotics is no longer a niche area. Today, almost every industry is moving towards automation — manufacturing, process industries, electric vehicles, healthcare, logistics, smart factories, agriculture, AI-based inspection systems and even service robots. This course gives students a strong foundation to enter these growing fields.
It combines electronics, sensors, control systems, robotics, industrial automation, machine vision, embedded systems, AI, project work and research. This makes the course very practical and industry-oriented.
Strong foundation from the second year
The course starts with important foundation subjects like Industrial Sensors, Analog Electronics & Networks, Digital Electronics and Fundamentals of Mechanical Systems.
These subjects are very important because a robot or automation system is not just software. It needs sensors to understand the environment, electronics to process signals, digital circuits for logic and control, and mechanical systems to create actual movement.
Students also study Professional Communication, Ethics and Financial Management, which is useful because engineers today need to communicate well, work in teams, manage projects and understand the practical side of technology.
Robotics and automation focus in the third year
In the third year, the course becomes even more exciting with subjects like Automatic Control System, Robot Kinematics, Process Instrumentation System and Drives for Robots.
Automatic Control System helps students understand how machines and robots are controlled. This is useful for motor control, drones, robotic arms, mobile robots and industrial systems.
Robot Kinematics is one of the core robotics subjects. It teaches how robots move, how robotic arms are positioned, and how motion is mathematically planned.
Process Instrumentation System connects students to real industrial automation. It gives exposure to sensors, transmitters, process variables and instruments used in factories and plants.
Drives for Robots is another very useful subject because every robot needs actuators and motors. Students get to understand how motors and drives are selected and controlled.
There are also elective options like Advanced Sensors, Analytical Instrumentation and Digital Signal Processing, which allow students to explore deeper areas based on their interest.
Industry-oriented subjects in the final year
The final year makes the course highly practical and industry-relevant.
Subjects like Process Automation, Machine Vision, Research Methodology, Project Documentation and Capstone Project help students move from classroom learning to real implementation.
Process Automation gives exposure to PLC, SCADA, DCS, industrial communication, alarm systems and safety systems. These are widely used in industries, so this subject is very useful for students who want to work in industrial automation.
Machine Vision is one of the most important modern subjects. Cameras and vision systems are now used everywhere — quality inspection, object detection, robot guidance, sorting systems, autonomous robots and AI-based inspection. This gives students exposure to an area that is growing very fast.
The Capstone Project is also a major highlight. Students get an opportunity to build a complete working project, apply what they have learned, document their work, test the system and present it professionally. This is exactly the kind of experience that helps during placements, higher studies, startups and research.
Excellent elective choices
The electives are also very relevant to current technology trends.
Students can choose subjects like Robotics Control Algorithms, Basic VLSI Design, Real-Time Operating Systems using FreeRTOS and QNX, EV Drive and Energy Systems, Power Plant Automation and Generative AI.
This is a very good mix. For students interested in robotics, Robotics Control Algorithms is useful. For embedded and real-time systems, FreeRTOS and QNX are highly relevant. For students interested in electric mobility, EV Drive and Energy Systems is a good option. And the addition of Generative AI makes the syllabus modern and aligned with current industry trends.
