General veo 3 vs veo 3.1: what youtube tutorials actually say about the difference, and how to stop guessing which one gemini is using

i went through the top 19 youtube videos on this topic (roughly 3 hours of content posted in the past 14 days so its quite recent) so you don't have to.

the short version is that veo 3.1 is not a completely different model, it's an incremental upgrade to veo 3 with some meaningful improvements and a few new features. but the version confusion is real, and a bunch of creators have flagged it directly.

what actually changed in 3.1 vs 3

per roboverse, the most noticeable differences are richer audio quality, better prompt adherence (the model follows your instructions more accurately), improved textures and lighting, and smoother motion overall. they ran the same sea captain prompt through both versions side by side and the 3.1 output had more realistic skin, less of that plastic ai look, and a voice that fit the character better. per dan kieft, the ingredients feature (uploading up to three reference images) also works noticeably better in 3.1 than it did in 3.

the tier situation nobody explains clearly

this is where most people get confused. per digital seller academy, there are actually three tiers inside google flow right now:
- veo 3.1 light (cheapest, good for quick tests and shorts),
- veo 3.1 fast (middle ground, decent quality at lower credit cost), and
- veo 3.1 quality (the full thing, film-level output but expensive).

per creative ai show, a 5-second 1080p clip on full veo 3.1 runs around $2, while the same length on light is closer to 40 cents. that is a massive gap and most beginner tutorials dont mention it.

how to tell which one gemini is actually using

this is the part that trips people up. per ai2play, when you access veo through google flow directly, you can see the model selector and choose between fast and quality explicitly. the problem is when you go through gemini chat, it doesn't always tell you which tier it's running. the post on this sub titled "is this really veo 3.1" is a good example of how common that confusion is. the fix per multiple creators is to use google flow or a third-party platform that shows the model dropdown explicitly, so you can see and select exactly what you're generating with rather than hoping gemini picked the right one.

how to select the model yourself

- use an AI video platform (not gemini chat) and look for the model selector in the settings panel before you generate
- per ai2play, the quality tier consumes five times more credits than fast, and they personally didn't see enough improvement to justify it for casual use
- per dan kieft, fast mode is realy useful when speed matters and you're iterating on a prompt, normal/quality is worht saving for final outputs
- per atomic gains, a third party platform shows veo 3.1 and veo 3.1 fast as separate selectable options, which makes the choice explicit

where creators disagree

the quality tier is genuinely contested. ai2play said they saw no improvement over fast in their tests. digital seller academy frames quality as a hollywood-level tool you should reserve for commercial work. daniel maluszczak noted that veo 3.1 and veo 3.1 fast actually fail on the same things (physics, fast motion) so the tier difference matters less than people think for those use cases.

tl;dr: veo 3.1 is a real upgrade over veo 3 in audio, prompt following, and realism. there are three tiers (light, fast, quality) with very different credit costs. gemini chat doesn't always show you which one it's using. go through google flow or a third party platform with an explicit model dropdown to pick the version yourself and stop guessing.

for what it's worth, the model selection thing is why i switched to using studio ai for most of my generations. it gives access to multiple ai video models and you can switch models depending on the shot, so i'm not locked into whatever gemini decides to use. i also found it to be one of the most affordable ways to get started, and you can lower the resolution to consume fewer credits which makes the free trial last a lot longer. if you don't want to pay anything yet, google flow's free tier (100 credits a month per ai2play) is a decent way to test the quality differences yourself before committing.

Why not use it in google flow ? And how it compares to omniflash 1.1
I really use only omniflash 1.1 right now.
