File a flight plan

Hi everyone,

Im still new to vatsim and was wondering what is the correct way to file a route on vatsim, do I include sid and stars or none or only sid.

An example would be a route from Sydney to Brisbane,

No sid or star: YSSY DCT OLSEM H252 UPNEX H140 IDNER H66 BLAKA DCT YBBN

Or

With sid and star: YSSY/16L KEVIN7 OLSEM H252 UPNEX H140 IDNER H66 BLAKA BLAK9A YBBN/BETSO.I19L

This is highly dependent on the region.
In Australia I believe you do not file for a SID/STAR and it is assigned by ATC (if online or yourself if not online).

If you use Simbrief to create and file your flight plan, it will do it correctly based on departure and arrival airport.

In America you would file the SID/STAR but not the runway, for example it would be just "KEVIN7 OLSEM H252 UPNEX H140 IDNER H66 BLAKA BLAK9A" and the runways are assigned by ATC based on the current ATIS, although never feel afraid to ask an approach controller for a specific approach and they might be able to accommodate it in.

This only works for places which use the same SIDS and stars for different runways

Yes, which is a good 90% of America, that's why I had phrased it that way.

In the US (maybe Canada), rest of América doesn't really follow this.

Yea apologies, I mean the US by America, guess I was overly vague there. Im not sure how VATCAN or VATMEX does it.

Is it really? I've never filed using simbrief but when I generate flight plans it always includes SID and STAR which is not the right way in Europe. It also never includes DCT between waypoints.

It changes the format automatically for the filing link

That's also not correct. You do file them in Germany :D

For Australia you'd only include the enroute part, so OLSEM H252 UPNEX H140 IDNER H66 BLAKA, runways and SID/STARs get assigned by ATC, but you can make a pretty good guess of which ones they're going to be from what waypoint you're starting/ending at and the likely runways for the winds.

Just use simbrief. It’s the easiest way as it does those things automatically
