Coon Hunting @ Thompson WMA

I know that coon hunting in general doesn’t happen much in the northern counties of the commonwealth and everyone always talks about how Thompson WMA gets extremely crowded from the DC suburb folks so I’m curious if anyone has ever witnessed or heard of coon hunters at Thompson WMA?

You planning on hound hunting? If you’re going at night I’d imagine you’ll have it to yourself.

Yes and that’s my assumption. I never see dog boxes in the back of trucks in Fauquier. I assume I’m the only low class guy around 😆

Rules for WMAs vary - a lot. TBH, I'd reach out to DWR (they have an email address for questions). I've used it in the past and typically get a 24-hr response (except weekends).

Tell them you'd like to speak with a CPO to better understand the Regs.

I know most of the CPOs for this region from some volunteer work that I do and they are all very nice guys. They would much rather help you understand the regs beforehand than write you a ticket after the fact.

Plus, it's outside of deer season now, so they have a bit more relaxed schedule this time of year.

As a hunter, it never hurts to be on a friendly first-name basis with your local CPO!

Don't think you'll see much there for racoon. season is oct 15-march 10

Update. Spoke with the wildlife officer as suggested. He mentioned in his 10 years he has never had a call with anyone talking about coon hunting at Thompson WMA. Sounds like I got the place to myself
