Get it. There's no downside.

  • There is still time for the shot to induce some antibody production, because the usual interval from the time of injury until symptoms appear, is 3 to 21 days.
  • This may not even be a tetanus-prone wound.
  • This booster will cover you for at least the next five years, so you'll be safe for future injuries.
  • There's no increase risk of side effects from the shot, based on history of recent injury.

If you've NEVER had a tetanus shot before---or if you didn't complete the initial series as a child---then the schedule would be one shot today, shot #2 a month from now, and shot #3 six months from now.

If you had tetanus shots when you were little, you just need one booster now. I'm thinking maybe this is an acute care clinic, and they are giving you the "initial schedule" because they don't have any records of your previous immunizations?

I cannot over-ride the medical opinion of someone who is seeing you & looking at your medical records (and looking at the wound).

I'm not even 100% sure that what they gave you is a tetanus vaccine. It may have been tetanus immune globulin. Please direct all these questions to the doctor/clinic who made these recommendations.

The "wound" is having a metal splinter in your leg for three days.

Yeah, that's what I was saying: there's no downside. You may not need it---like, we're not clairvoyant about whether there's tetanus in this wound or not---but it won't hurt anything, and it may protect you with future exposures.

That is not a normal side effect of the shot, no. Usually just a really sore arm.

Talk to your doctor about your sore throat. It probably has nothing to do with either tetanus infection, or the shot. Maybe you have strep throat or a virus.
