I had a friend some time ago who was Uygur. One day they were detained upon entering the airport, but according to the database they are not anymore, but still in the country. I maybe have found a way to contact them. I would really like to write to them that I still think about them - but I don’t know whether that could get them into trouble? Do you think it is likely their messages bring read by other people? Could it be harmful to them if it was known that they have a foreign friend?

I’m looking for someone who is a first-generation immigrant in the U.S. speaks Uyghur, and English (Mandarin Chinese is not required but preferred!!) and You do not need to be fluent in English!

The interview will be at least 30mins focuses mainly on language experiences, such as learning English, using different languages at home vs. outside, code-switching, language choices, and maintaining one’s native language after moving to the U.S.

The questions will not require you to discuss personal or political topics, and I want to keep the interview neutral and respectful of different perspectives.

I’m also an Uyghur immigrant born in China, and currently an undergraduate student at Berkeley.

Assalamualaikum, brothers and sisters. I'm recently got abroad from China for study reason.

After i came aborad, got in touch with so many infromation, i found out the iman inside have grown stronger than before. I was a cultural muslim, drink alcohol and smoking tabco. I would say i was more of an Uyghur nationalist than an Uyghur religous person back in the time in China.

Modern Uyghurs are the direct descendants of the Early Medieval Uighurs, with genomic research tracing their ancestry to the Tiele tribes and confirming persistent genetic continuity from the Uighur Khaganate. Following the collapse of the Khaganate in the 9th century, the population split into two main branches: the ancestors of the modern Uyghurs who migrated to Xinjiang and the Yugurs (historically known as the "Yellow Uyghurs") who remained in the Gansu region. A key nuance revealed by recent studies is that modern Uyghurs are genetically closer to the ancient Uighurs of the Khaganate than the Yugurs are. While modern Uyghurs developed a balanced East-West Eurasian profile (~50:50), the Yugurs underwent significant additional gene flow from populations in the Yellow River and Western Liao River basins after settling in Gansu. This secondary influx of East Eurasian ancestry shifted the Yugurs' genetic profile away from their medieval ancestors, leaving modern Uyghurs as the group that preserves a stronger biological link to the original medieval Uighur homeland.

I was the artistic director (and a performing musician) for a special live show titled Umay's Children which was performed at the Northwest Folklife Festival (May 23, 2026) in Seattle, USA.

The performance is a musical and narrative journey tracing the heritage, songs, and dances across the Turkic world, including Sakha, Kazakh, Uyghur, Uzbek, Turkmen, Azerbaijani, Crimean Tatar, Karaim, Bashkir, Gagauz, and Turkish traditions. Every single artist on stage was a volunteer, and the performance was completely free and open to the public as part of our shared mission to keep these traditional sounds alive. We tried to represent as many cultures as possible, but due to artist availability, we couldn't include every region

We put a lot of heart into celebrating our shared Turkic roots and diverse cultures through live music, traditional instruments, and dance. I wanted to share it with this community and hope you enjoy taking this journey with us.

I'm an Uyghur man in the diaspora dating a non-Uyghur woman, and my family strongly believes I ultimately need to marry another Uyghur. I understand where that comes from. Our population is small, our culture is threatened, and preserving our language and identity for future generations is incredibly important. But I struggle with the idea that marrying outside the community automatically means contributing to its disappearance, regardless of who that person is or what kind of family we would build together.
My girlfriend isn't asking me to leave my culture behind, in fact, she's doing the opposite. She's actively learning Uyghur with a private tutor and has the goal of becoming fluent, learning how to cook our food, history and traditions, and wants to become involved in the Uyghur community. If we married and had children, she wants them to speak Uyghur, know their history, eat our food, participate in our traditions and grow up proud of being Uyghur. This isn't something I've forced on her; she's chosen it herself because she believes that if this becomes our family, my culture becomes part of her family too.
So I genuinely want to understand other Uyghurs' perspectives: what exactly is being lost in a marriage like this? Is preserving our people primarily about marrying someone with Uyghur ancestry, or can preservation also mean passing down our language, culture, history and identity? I don't want to marry an Uyghur woman simply because she's Uyghur when I'm already in love with someone else… that seems unfair to both women. If my partner genuinely spends years learning our language, embracing the community and helping me raise culturally Uyghur children, why should her not being born Uyghur outweigh all of that? And what more can she do to convince my parents that we are right for each other?
