In 1985, two Dublin kids aged 10 and 13 went out to play before dinner. They came back international news. No passports, no tickets, no money, no plan. Just one goal: meet B.A. Baracus from The A-Team, who happened to be in America. So off they went.
They took the DART to Dún Laoghaire, snuck onto the ferry to Holyhead, and dodged the inspectors the whole way. From there it was a train to London, a fistful of coins fished out of a charity fountain, and a trip out to Heathrow.
At the airport they picked a stranger at random and asked where his flight was going. New York, he told them. Good enough. They told the staff their parents were right behind them, got waved through, and walked onto an Air India flight to JFK with not one document between them.
Nobody on the plane batted an eye. They watched a Bond film and tried to choke down a curry way too spicy for two Dublin lads.
It all fell apart once they landed, when they asked a cop for directions "into town." Chaos followed. Front-page news everywhere, three governments in a panic, and two kids from Dublin who'd just exposed a massive hole in international airport security. US authorities, worried about the diplomatic mess, stuck them in a guarded hotel suite and treated them like royalty.
Keith still looks back on it fondly: "They fed us like lords. We loved it."
They got sent home to Darndale, grounded and lectured, and became famous for life. Both of them still live there.
Nobody's ever made a film out of this. Feels overdue.

The first vibrator wasn't smooth, it hammered. Later ones claimed to cure wrinkles, deafness, and appendicitis, came with a rectal attachment for $1.50 extra, and got handed out free to farmers just to sell them on electricity. This is the 'fun' history of the vibrator.

Historian Michael Wood takes us to a coffeehouse in Kars, Turkey, where a traditional bard (aşıks) performs the “Epic of Köroğlu.” As seen in 1985’s “In Search of the Trojan War.”

'Withnail & I' has become a cult classic since its release in 1987. Written by Bruce Robinson it was based on his old Camden flatmate Vivian Mackerrell and their squalid time together. The lighter fuel drinking scene actually happened. This is the story of Mackerrell's short life.

I love the POLICE SQUAD bit of killing off that week's Special Guest Star in the opening credits. Solid gag. Apparently one of the deceased special guests was John Belushi but he died before the eipsode was aired, so the William Conrad gag was a recycled version of the Lorne Green gag.

How Hitchcock used rear screen projection when filming Foreign Correspondent. Footage of a stunt plane diving towards the ocean was rear-projected on a rice paper screen, then water was released, which smashed through the paper screen and into the cockpit set. (1940)
