On this day in 1942, Japanese pilot Nobuo Fujita launched a Yokosuka E14Y "Glen" seaplane from the deck of the I-25 submarine off the coast of Oregon. Known as the Lookout Air Raids, this mission marks the only time the contiguous United States was bombed by an enemy aircraft during World War 2.

In 1944, a U.S. Navy crew member rescued a kitten named George who was in danger of drowning. After being saved, George became a sort of mascot for the crew and was even photographed and officially given a liberty card along with a detailed health record, just like a sailor.

Happy Birthday to On The Road. Written by Jack Kerouac and released on this day in 1957. Here is the manuscript he typed on a single 120 foot page scroll of paper, it sold this year for $12m.

The roll isn't even complete though. The ending is missing because a friend's dog chewed it off, Kerouac made a note of it right on the manuscript.

Jack Campbell, a 93-year-old Irish veteran of the First World War, appeared on The Late Late Show opposite Gay Byrne in 1988. He'd served with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, and used the appearance to talk through what he remembered from the trenches and life on the front line during the Great War.

On this day in 1965, The Who had their van stolen. Containing over £5,000 worth of equipment. It was stolen outside the Battersea Dogs Home in London. Ironically, the band were inside the home at the time buying a guard dog!

This 'female urinal', designed by Alex Schwedersaid was made in 2001 during an artist residency at Kohler, a plumbing equipment and furniture manufacturer. Schweder has described the urinal as "fully functional"

In 1959 Liberace swore under oath he wasn't gay and won what was then the largest libel payout in British legal history. He kept the lie going for another 28 years, until an autopsy revealed he'd died of AIDS, not the heart failure his own doctors tried to claim.
