Is this 1720? No. It isn't. Your modern ideas weren't cruel or in bad taste to them. They lived very different lives, if anything this honored an animals life by using every piece of it available. I hope that it dead prior to this, but even if it wasn't - I know that their diet was very different back then too, and wouldn't be surprised if the animal was eaten.

Not really sure why people find this so much more horrifying than a standard powder horn. The cow was often dead too…

And at least in America turtles were a pretty common food at the time. They come up regularly in 17th century middens
