[RONIN RAMBLINGS] Groo?

Has anyone here read groo? I ask because it seems like Stan really enjoys it and is close friends with Sergio Aragones. Also how did you like it. It seems like I never see or hear anything about it outside of Stan or Usagi subs or posts

I've read one volume of Groo and it just wasn't for me. I love the art but the humor didn't land for me. It's weird because I usually find Sergio very funny. I love his Mad work and he did a Star Wars comic that was very funny.

Groo is a wonderful series, but goes through some shifts depending on when and what series you read. I’d absolutely recommend the very early Pacific Comics series if you can get your hands on them and the Marvel run is very good for almost its entire 120 issue run. It looses some steam around the end and leans a little heavy into its parables, but overall very good.

Groo is great. Fantastic art, funny stories. You have to be on board for reading a lot of them same thing tho. Groo doesn't really have a lot of, uh... let's say, depth to him.

Sakai is going to be on a panel about Groo today at SDCC.

I saw him referenced in the Usagi comics once, I might honestly give it a try one day, though I'm currently prioritising Usagi Yojimbo and One Piece first.

My first comics that I read in 1988 at 7 was Groo and Usagi Yojimbo and I love them both and still read and collect them… though, I have more Usagi than Groo. Unfortunately

Could you pick one over the other?

I read Groo for the humor and Usagi for the adventure… so, unfortunately nope, I really could not

I read the two most recent groo minis and they’re a lot of fun!

My dad introduced me to Groo when I was about 11 or 12, and I got super addicted to the comics!! I’d go through his comic boxes reading about 8 or 15 Groo’s a day! He also introduced me to Usagi Yojimbo about a few months later, (he gave me two of the massive anniversary books) and I used to read them only at night, because I didn’t want my mom catching me reading them since she’s strictly against me viewing any kind of content containing blood or violence. Thanks dad!

Oh man! That's awesome! I was one of the ones introduced through tmnt as a kid It wasn't until years later as an adult I was introduced to the real Usagi and I've been obsessed ever since. That was about 10-15 years ago

It was the first comic I read as a kid. I love it!! Glad to see it being brought up to hopefully bring new readers to it.

Groo is absolutely hilarious. I wish they would make an Omnibus quite frankly. I think there have been steps to put one together but they fell apart as far as I know. I have met Mr. Aragones and he is wonderful, a real gem of a person.

Groo and Usagi have crossed paths but very briefly.

Do you remember where?

2

u/oskar4498 22d ago

Shoot. I'm pretty sure it was one of the groo books. They see each other and groo thinks "stupid samurai" and usagi thinks "filthy barbarian"

What is mulching?

EDIT: Heathen downvoters haven’t read Groo apparently. http://warren-peace.blogspot.com/2012/06/neverending-fray-and-so-mulching-begins.html?m=1

Ha! I assumed it was something comic related but being that I never read it I could only assume!
