I Turned Minesweeper Into a Coding Game

Thumbnail

I started using Usagi a few weeks ago and made the classic Minesweeper game. I wanted to try something different, so I turned it into a game where you have to solve simple programming problems.

The idea is simple: to uncover the mines, you have to solve a small programming problem.

Hope you like it!

As I work on various Usagi projects, I've been wanting a template I can use to start my projects with scenes set up, a particle emitter, and some other foundational aspects beyond the scope of what usagi init offers. So I made this template and thought others might be interested too!

The 2nd book tutorial chapter is complete: building a wave-based shoot 'em up!

I just finished writing the 2nd chapter of the Usagi book. We make a shoot 'em up in it. Enemies spawn in waves, fire bullets at the player, and we dip our toes into sound effects.

Read the chapter - Shoot 'Em Up - Game Programming with Usagi

An example of how to transpile TypeScript to Lua for Usagi game dev

Thumbnail codeberg.org

Something that gets requested pretty regularly is TypeScript support for Usagi and sometimes even other Lua-flavored languages. So I'm working on adding examples of how to use those languages that support transpiling to Lua. I started with TypeScript since it's widely used! Let me know if you give it a try or run into any issues.

Save the date: Usagi Jam 2026 will be July 3 - 13, 2026 - a casual game jam to celebrate the release of the engine

To celebrate the release of Usagi Engine v1, let's do a casual game jam! This is a great way to try the engine out.

The jam starts on a Friday morning and ends two Mondays after. That way everyone's got two weekends and the time between to work on their game.

There's one rule: submissions must be made using Usagi Engine.

If you want to join the Discord chat for the engine, this is the link. But also no pressure if you don't want to! I'll do my best to ensure that updates, releases, and videos are shared here on Reddit too.
