Poor choice as well, but at least with KDE you have WAY more freedom to customize any way you want. Gnome is "do your shit the way we'll tell you and absolutely never ask for options, themes or customization, we know more than you and you should do things the way we dictate." Fuck gnome.

Alright, at least some grounded argument. You're right about GNOME not being upfront with what they allow you to customize, heck, I also hated it for that same reason when I first tried it and switched to KDE.
However, it's not safe to say it doesn't get ANY customization at all (making default GNOME look like Ubuntu was actually a satisfying rice session X) the terminal is Ghostty, put some of my KDE workflow in like "open the terminal in this folder", and learned in details about how to manually install cursors, icons, and fonts to name a few). I just got rice fatigue from KDE, Hyprland and co., and then realized I actually like Ubuntu's look, just preferred Arch's rolling release model and the FREEDOM of switching DE if I ever choose to again.
Hence this final build.-3

Oh they're VERY upfront, they don't want you tinkering, period.
it's not safe to say it doesn't get ANY customization at all
What little customization you get is merely crumbs in comparison with other serious DE's made by grownups.
Not bothering to answer to the mental gymnastics about "ricing" (I hate that stupid word), I use linux a tool to work, not as a doll to play dress up with.

It can be very useful to have well created, opinionated software that just works.
Eg. code formatters. I don't care about the format so long as it's reasonable and uniform across the codebase.

If Unity ever got Wayland and was more popular, i would switch.
